I plan to do FPV with my tricopter.
Main thing is for a plane, if loss reception for a while you can still fly straight or glide and try to turn back.
For a heli it goes out of control immediately if you lose video reception, so need some kind of auto-stabilization.

I personally think that an antenna tracker is probably overkill, and a lot of work to set up if you're just going to fly short distances. You will probably get away with a simple 8-dBi patch for 2.4GHz up to 5km and a bit more. The thing is to keep it simple. The more complex your setup, the more things can go wrong, and the longer it takes to setup and take down.

I'm planning just to use the fpv on trex500 with head tracker.
An omni whip or dipole antenna with short range is just fine for a heli FPV.
Fly heli normally by LOS also cannot go too far, you're not able to judge the orientation. You don't want to push the range for a heli. Once lost the video, the heli is hard to recover unlike a plane.
When using omni antenna do not fly overhead. Overhead is an antenna blind spot. The antenna gain is like a donut shape.
Patch antenna not useful for heli unless you are using tracker. Then again the short range do not call for patch antenna.
Check out this thread and video Antenna 101 and you will learn all about antennas.

Check out this thread.
MiniDV vs harddisk DVR. The two most common type of recording device for FPV.
MiniDV is better quality but a pain in the ass to edit as it is sequential recording.
Also MiniDV more expensive, you are paying for the lens and all that.
You can use it for dual purpose.
Harddisk DVR has greater recording capacity. Easy to transfer video to the computer. But be careful, not all harddisk DVR has high bit rate. Read the thread for more details. BR3002 is recommended for high bit rate.
Another type is an EZcap type of dongle that connects to your notebook computer. Its fine as long as you don't mind lugging around a notebook to the field.
