how many types of iom in BR? can someone explain a little on each design?

some are really fat and some very slim. last sunday i saw the black iom flew over choopy waves !!! while the rest nose dive into the water.
i'm a rc sotong. And i know nuts about it.

                    Dear Fuse,
The black one is called the Azetone and she is my baby. She was designed in Sweden (where I guess they have choppy conditions) and yes it resists nose diving more than other models. The hull design is unusuall. Very sharp bow like a destroyer to cut thru waves. Very "full" bow section just before the keel gives volume to resist nosediving. Fairly flat stern to improve hydroplaning. At waterline she is 170mm wide to there is less wetted surface. I would sat she is considered a mid beam yacht. All the weight is concentrated in the stern to the bow section has very low mass and does now bob up and down too much.

The details can be found at www.azetone.se

IOM's are a one design calss meaning all yachts have a minimum/maximum requirement to meet. Hulls must be max 1000mm long and can be made out of wood or fiberglass. Carbon/kevlar is not allowed. Mast and rigging has specific diminsions and the all up weight has to be minimum 4kg. The IOM is the fastest 1m monohull other than the us derivative USOM where there is no restriction on materials used.

I bought the Azetone as a kit so I had to put her together and paint her which saved me almost 50% of the cost. Delivery is usually 3 to 4 months depending on the level of completion you require the builder to preform

                    Cheers!

                      excellent feedback mate,

may i know what are the current design which are so called better then the rest? sinced owning a IOM is a high cost factor, lets not buy one and regret.

any other IOm owners ? out there?

Your simple question is very difficult to answer. All IOM's have more or less the same boat speed and it is the tuning of the sails that will determine how fast she goes. This means tuning the rig for the right conditions. In flat water you tune the sails differently than you do in choppy conditions

Another factor is how you like to sail. Some prefer speed as opposed to pointing ability so you travel a longer distance to got to you destination but move faster. Others are the opposite. They prefer a high pointing ability so you travel a shorter distance but move slower. the flavor of the month seems to be towards a narrow hull. Theory suggests that a narrow hull preforms better in low wind conditions. Wide hull preforms better in high wind conditions, but the latest designs seems to do well in both.

My advice is to choose a yacht that has a good history of wins.

The Azetone is slightly different in this respect because there is basically only one setting in the sails and it is used for most conditions and the only time you adjust this setting is when wind is below 3 knots. Thats when you ease out the jib about 2 deg to re-balance the sails/boat.

                        Cheers!

I find myself sheeting in much tighter than I used to. My current setting is 9deg for the jib and 1 deg for the main. I would not recomend this setting for non-IOM yachts.

                          Hi Blackite,

I had some brief experiences with the Kyosho Fairwind in the 1980s. Then I had also purchased a Graupner one-metre class kit called the Miramare. Till today, it is still new in box. Not sure when I will build this as finding a place to put the completed model in the house may be a problem now. Tried checking up the Internet and it seems that this kit is no longer in production. Not much news on it. Do you know anything about this model, and whether it is a good one? Cheers.

                            Dear Prefer scale,
The yacht you have is a F5E compliant yacht much like the hurricane 1000. it is still raced in eastern europe I think. Very similar to the IOM but is lighter. Should sail well and take on the seawind without much difficulty. I cannot comment on the supplied sails as they are the backbone for speed and I have not seen them.
                            Regards
