Great project Phan All this time, I was expecting to see a monohull... but this is one cool project A challenging one too with that hydro surface drive. Should throw up a curvy rooster tail when she gets going
If in doubt - add more horsepower!

thanx Dor... I am abit nervous about how to set it up though. Had input from X34 on the prop height which is now my bible.

I got a 400 mono hull that can place a standard racing pack (I think one of the cheapest class of starter boats). Maybe that will be next.

Wah, sui leh! You mean you've had this hull for quite some time?

I think about a couple of weeks that I had this boat.... but have not been able to build it faster.

how do I tell if I have gotten a surface drive prop or not? I am using the plastic Graupner Hydro prop - the smallest one (2318) for a start. How do I tell from the shape if its surface?

I tried to keep the parts and boat built cost to a reasonably low level without self-machining parts. So no metal props were used (I can forgo speed for some fun factor as a more affordable price and get more boats in the process).

Quite cool leh. Mind sharing with me where you got it? Looks like ABS.

it is ABS. Bought it here - www.astecmodels.co.uk

The boat is affordable and something for me to start on an easy class - but the general pounds exchange adds a markup psychologically. Got three boats from them.

Taken from the surface piercing article in Offshore Electrics.

What is a surface-piercing propeller, anyway? Simply stated, a surface-piercing propeller (or surface propeller) is a propeller that is positioned so that when the vessel is underway the waterline passes right through the propeller's hub.

So a surface prop is not the shape of it but rather it's position on the boat.

                    Small size makes fast boats.

Hmmm....the small ones are rather cheap and freight actually not too bad. I was thinking of getting a hull from US but they quote me USD$30+ freight.

yes - on the whole I am happy.

Surface prop - so any prop put lower would be it is it?

And Phan thought I had a boat fetish!!

Thanks for the prop article BTW... very good reading

Actually not a real fetish - for one the boats are not expensive. Another reason is I wasnt sure if I was going to get it right. If and when I get this thing to the pond (probably Sunday I hope), you will see the bad scars from changes in my mind on where things are. So the hull is cut and repasted back.

At this point, Mad A is tempting me to pull apart the thing again (with that article).

it's ok Phan, I was actually referring to Mad A

Don't rip it apart yet... test it at the pond first so you can see how your current set-up behaves and get a point of reference. Surface drive setups can't be tested in a bathtub either. They need a bit of forward velocity to work properly. It's their ability to transition smoothly from a submerged state at rest to a surface piercing state at plane that will really tell you whether you've got it spot on.

oh yah - Mad A, yes I should have noticed that he is quite obsessed.... thought I heard he has quite a few boats in progress.

Dor - actually better to rip it out now than later. Dun think its quite possible to rebuild once I had the top hull on.

Any ideas what is the angle of the prop and the tolerance of angle for a surface prop?
