Newbie Q: Which boat good for kids

thinking of buying a boat which meets the following:

    1) less than $200
    2) easy to control for 5 year old kid
    3) can modify for future use (as the kid grow older, such as change to bigger motor)
    4) easy for me to put LED light strips (on AAA batteries) for attractive purposes
    5) runs on batteries. (nitro stuff is out for kids)

I saw some of these toys for less than $150 in tai sing toy shop in north bridge road, donno whether worth while or not, so didnt buy

i got some other noob questions:

    1) what safeguards can i place to prevent the boat from getting stuck in the middle of the pond? (ie no battery, out of range, propeller got stuck with seaweed....there is no way i am gonna swim to retrieve the boat back)

    2) i notice from the hobby shops in fok hai buidling that there are really super pro remote controls. what is the difference between these super pro ones and those that comes with the toy?

    1) Your kid like fast boat or slow boat?

    2) Toy boats are a good start but the speed n turning may not be impressive.

    3) There is nothing to safeguard a boat from being stuck in the middle of the pond. But we do use a few methods to retrieve a stranded boat less swimming out.

    4) Every boat hull is designed for a certain purpose and speed so there is where the price difference is.

A good RTR boat to recommend is Aquacraft Reef Racer. It is being sold at NTC. Should be safe n fast enough for ur kid. It is self righting also.

        wow thanks man!

what does self righting mean? is it the boat can self correct to go straight?

does the reef racer has a ruddle to steer the direction?

Self righting means if the boat is flipped, it is able to row back to its upright position and it is good to go again.

Of cos it has a rudder. Its under the hull.

U may wana check out the SuperVee 27 while u are there too. This boat is much faster n more expensive. May be for urself to race against ur son. It can hit speeds of 40mph.

It should be in the S$600 range. If u get from the States, its only US$289+.

There are a lot of brand new SV27 sellers on ebay!!! Here is an example.

                      US$256.50 + US$78 = US$334.50

                      Total price in SGD - US$334.50 x 1.4 = S$468.30

                      Compare that to NTC pricing.

                        Sorry for saying this :

If LHS pricing is not as competitive as online vendors, the customers will definately make the right.

Lucky NTC is not a vendor here, if not I tink the above post will be gone for good. Anyway I enquired with NTC abt the SV27 pricing b4. Was shocked when I hear it. FYI, SV27 is made in china also. Most of the stuff are MIC goods too.

wow this AquaCraft SuperVee 27 really looks super cool

the website say the battery is:

6-Cell Battery Packs: Two with Dean's Ultra connectors, DTXC1905

Q: what does this mean? is this the sub-c battery pack of 6 to get 7.2v?

the website also say it INCLUDES: AquaCraft SuperVee Deep Vee Boat with motor, speed control, 2-channel
radio system, one servo, decals and illustrated instruction manual

Q: I heard some of these RC toys don come with remote control. does the list of includes mean that the 2 channel radio system = the remote control?

Q: what does 2 channel means?

Q: how the speed control work, does it mean that the remote control can control the speed?

those less than $100 toys i saw in tai sing basically don have a working ruddle (for show one). they have 2 motors. so if want to go left, the remote control side have to push the left level up and and the right level down

pai seh so many noob question

SV27 is a RTR brushless motor boat. Its comes with its 2Ch transmitter. You will need two Sub-C 6 cell pack for it to run, thus making it 14.4V.

Normally ppl will get two packs of 2S lipo connect in series making it 14.8V. It will be lighter and more punch + runtime.

Tis one definately not suitable for ur kid cos its too fast and it will hurt ppl if it were to crash into someone near the edge of the pond. But its suitable for u.

It is a good boat to intro u to the world of fast electric boats. The guys in the States treat tis boat as a trainer and move on to bigger n faster boats. Sorry abt too much reference to the States as I go to their forum often to learn from them. Me also newbie in fast electric boats.

Toys will be toys till u modify them into speed demons. That was my past time not too long ago. Me also went Tai Seng n buy their toyboat n put in R/C grade electronics.

But they can never be as fast as R/C boat hulls as they have too much drag due to their hull + power setup.

                              Let the modification go on!!!
