Building the XL25 Racing Yacht

ok, I am starting a new thread for the building of XL25 racing yacht instead of posting everything under the "materials for making sail" thread...

The plan is available online, FOC, from http://www.xl25.com. It is drawn to scale so you will have to use something like Photoshop to cut it up; print on A4 paper and then tape them back together.

Here's an overview of the "taped-back" plan, ready for use:

This yacht is about the same size as the Thunder Tiger Victoria...ok slightly smaller then, but at 850g (if I built it correctly ) it's a lot lighter.

There is no particular sequence in the buliding process, ie. u can choose to anything first - hull, rudder, keel or sail. I choose to build the rudder first.

Rudder outline is traced onto 2.5mm balsa, cut out and sand to shape. Epoxy resin coated on both sides and 2 layers of fibreglass apply on each side. Here's the messy stuff:

Stern bulkhead and Bow bulkhead cut from 2.5mm balsa and sand to shape. Main bulkhead built from 2.5mm scrap balsa.

7/16 brass tube to be cut to length for use as mast tube later.

36" x 9mm spruce dowel to be used as mast. Waterproof it will 2 to 3 layers of SIG Flat Coat or paint it with lacquer. Harden the top and bottom ends with thin CA. If u know where to get the right length and diameter of aluminium or carbon fibre tube pls let me know...I would like to have an alu or carbon mast.

Man you are fast, keep building and building and ...... where you find place to store all your staff. BTW is it OK to share your plan ..... too lazy trying get it to the right size ......

no prob ...i can send u a zip (about 1.5Mb) containing 13 tif files which are cut- ups of the big plan. all u need to do is to print each one on A4 papers then tape them together.

1. Trace the outline of the side hull onto a piece of tracing paper.

2. Cut a 10 inch balsa piece from one 2.5x75x915mm balsa plank,
and position it side by side with the longer remaining piece.

3. Position the traced hull plan u did in 1. over the balsa, adjust the balsa planks so that it covers the entire outline of the hull. When satisfy, lift the plan gently and glue the balsa with thin CA.

4. Glue the traced plan on to the joined balsa plank with the weakest glue u can find.

When glue is about to dry, use a sharp knife to run thru the outline of the hull, i mean really sharp one that can slice balsa like butter, and preferably with a round edge like this xacto:

Now you should have more or less a cutout of one side of the hull. With the plan still glued to the cutout, put on your favorite mask and sand the cutout to shape...no cheapo mask here ya, u don't want to get a nose full of balsa dust.

Remove the plan from the hull cutout. u should b able to just tear it off cleanly since u have used a weak glue and it's not fully dried yet. Sand the cutout to give a good shape. Use a new piece of 2.5x75x915 plank and cut a 10inch piece as before. Use the hull side u completed above as template and trace its outline onto the newly joined balsa plank to make the second side of the hull.
