How to compute the charging current of a battery

    More information about batteries

The internal resistance of the battery (Ri) changes with respect to the state of the battery and it follows the following:

When the battery is at its discharge condition:
. Ri = high depending of how discharge condition of your battery

When the battery is at its fully charge condition:
    . Ri = Low (Theoretically = 0 ohms)

Vbi = is always equal to the rated voltage of the battery.

Never use a voltmeter to measure the condition of your battery; whether it is fully charge or not. The resistance of a voltmeter theoretically is equal to infinity so even if the battery is at its fully discharge condition, the open circuit voltage will be high. Refer to the illustration below.

For a dischage battery, the internal resitance is high as discussed above. During charging process, this resistance will be reduced while the battery reaches its fully charge condition. But bear in mind not to let your batteries be discharge lower than safe discharge limits. If this happends, the internal resistance of the battery increases so much that it is already imposible to lower it down by pumping current to the battery. When this happends, your battery is dead. Discharging batteries using bulbs or motors are not recommended as the lower limit safe voltage is not monitored.
