    Lipo battery explodes and kills

A recent article in the Hong Kong Post concerning Lipo battery for mobile phones exploding and killing!

That is only for mobile phones - can you imagine if RC Lipo (with higher capacity) explodes in the same way?

    Ouch!

          Man killed in handphone explosion
Fake battery may be the cause
          July 06, 2007

IN what is believed to be the first handphone fatality in the world, a man in Gansu, China, was killed when the handphone in his shirt pocket exploded.

Mr Cai's nipple was burnt when his handphone exploded. -- Picture: APPLE DAILY
The blast had caused his ribs to break and pierce his heart, killing him instantly, reported Apple Daily.

The explosion is believed to be caused by a combination of high heat and a fake battery.

The victim, 22-year-old welder Xiao Jin Peng, was at work when the fatal accident happened on 19 Jun.

It was reported that Mr Xiao had his phone in his left shirt pocket when he started his welding work.

The temperature was around 50 deg C at that time.

At noon, a loud explosion was heard, and Mr Xiao was found sprawled on the floor, in a pool of blood. He died on arrival at the hospital.

Apple Daily quoted a technology expert who said that the blast could have been caused by a metal particle which had been heated to more than 100 deg C, and had come into contact with the phone.

Investigations carried out by Gansu authorities found that Mr Xiao did not use the battery from the original maker.

Mr Xiao's death is the latest in a spate of handphone explosions injuring users in China.

Last Wednesday, a Guangzhou man burnt his nipple after his second-hand handphone exploded.

Mr Cai Ya Di, who had bought the phone just the day before, was turning the phone on for the first time after charging it.

He was lying in bed topless when the phone exploded the moment he pressed the switch, causing his left nipple to be burnt.

His mattress had also caught fire.

The same day, another Guangzhou woman claimed that her handphone also exploded, injuring her hand and nearly disfiguring her.

A metal shard from her handphone cover was found embedded in her nose, and had to be taken out by her colleagues.

In May, a man in Dong Guan had his fingers burnt after his 5-day-old phone exploded following a 2-minute conversation.

There were also other reports of a Shenzhen woman who burnt her thigh when her phone exploded inside the handbag on her lap, as well as a Beijing woman whose handphone exploded after charging.

A Li-Ion and Li-Polymer battery if left alone... should not cause any problem.

Now practically all mobilephone's battery has a build in circuitry in the battery packages itself. That is why u see it has more than 2 contact point. What this circuitry for I know, does 2 things:
            1. It is an onboard battery charger.
            2. It is an LVC (or Low Voltage Cutoff) protection.

What I suspect is that all those fake batteries has a lousy circuitry where it tend to fail and when it fail, it somehow shorted the battery points together (because it is a battery charger and LVC, the battery is constantly connected to this circuit). This is like u short your battery together and thus causing explosion.

personally i think lipo technology are not up to the point where it is safe enough to be used in the general public... imagine with all the "experience" we all had with lipos and looking for the safest possible charger... buying of lipo sacks... or using earthen pots to cover it when charging...

li-ion like most metal cased batteries has a vent valve... sigh...

I think those fake batteries dun even have the LVC circuitry built in ! .....you know how those 'pple produce super cheap components lah ! .....they leave OUT all capacitors, Diodes and chips as long as they can get away with it !
Seriously running out of ...Storage space !

Without these components, the users are exposed to the danger. So consumers pls select carefully when buying.

The cases above happened in mainland China?

Heck! They might even use dead animal meat as well. I think it happen before right?

Most of the misc electronics circuitry like diode or capacitor will make the circuit stable or sort of protection. Without it, the circuit may still work BUT is risky or easily to fail or not protection when it fail. So u want to use? Not me!

Saw the news (CNN) last nite that because U.S. band imported items from China, now China take revenge by banning U.S. food as well. One of them is "tyson"
