Newbie with foamie ST cessna 182

    Hi everyone!

i'm new to RC flying & i've bought a ST cessna 182 for my first RC flight.
this was not my first ARF, it was a starmax F35 initially but after hearing many said the F35 will sure 95% crash at maiden prompted me to get a 'trainer' instead.

after building up the cessna 182, i tried to setup the plane's avionics but i have problem. the aileron, supplied & fixed on the main wing can't be centered even when i put the ch1 stick to neutral. also, there's a kinda of servo sound coming from the same servo as if the throw is still moving no doubt my stick is at the end point. can someone help me on this?

one note is this version is NOT the one JH selling currently. my cessna has flaps. take a look at the rear end shot.

also, after reading many forums on motor / esc overheating & burning, i open up as many ducts as i can hide on the cowl to aid cooling further.

this plane is well known for weak landing gears, i now know why. the plane weighs over a 1kg in RTF & the struts used are of the worst type, very soft & shaky. in fact the plane stood lower overnight when i left it there!

so i used some styrene sheets & 30min epoxy to strengthen those gears weak points, now it looks mean!

being a novice, i'll be doing my maiden flight in punggol this sunday to test it out. after spending numerous hours on simulation, my chances of crash has reduce to 75%...we shall see.

Hi, it has a span of 1206mm & 860mm length. it was resold in the west as 'hobbico cessna select' @USD249.99

lucky thing is i take my time to research it long enough to find it's origins...it's from china.

as a matter of fact, over 80% of the foamies are from china!

Cessna 182 is very common, from foamies to balsa to fibreglass fuse. I have my eye on the HC one with lights.

are you going to paint it? from my experience of flying and crashing, it's no point trying to maiden first then paint later. By the time, maiden finish, the plane is no longer the same. Might as well, do a nice paint job, get some pictures for memories then go for it.

Note to self: Must stop buying too much stuff.

                you're right!

this is the same ST cessna sold by JH, except that they don't come with flaps. i wanna learn as much of RC flying as i can so i bought the one plane with the controls; rudder, sterring geras, ailerons, elevators & flaps.

still, i got this sheaper than JH with all the controls...

humm, i never thought of painting it up...not this time.
like i said, i wanna learn how to RC fly first so damage is inevitable.
after many hours on simulation & being in the real aviation line for so long, i have to let myself to the test.

whatever it is, i will get the same plane back again after i master flying. this is the only plane i know of with all the full real plane controls!

                  hehe

i'm supposed to give a summary on my maiden this week, but it never take off.

sorry, something crop up when i was about to do maiden. the aileron servo gives some funny noise when i was doing my final checks prior to flying. it seems like the servo was still driving the aileron even when the stick already in the end point of the TX.

can someone advise me how come it's like that? the rest of the servo controls don't behave like this.

                    please help!

                      Hi Marc,

Just wondering.. have you fly other plane before ?
This is not really a plane for beginer due to it require a runway for proper take off and landing. It is not advisable to hand launch ..and landing on grass is a No No !

I own the same plane from Jet Hobby and the following break after the first flight when i attemp to land on grass :

                      1) Motor shaft
                      2) Motor mount.
                      3) Front Landing gear

Please beware that this plane use a different motor with special mount which you cannot find any replacement. Unless you decided to drill a holes in the thick firewall and replace the whole brushless motor.

As this is not a cheap plane (S$200plus from JH), if you are really a newbies like me, I will suggest you to master the taking off and landing using "E-starter" (which only cost S$35) before attempt to fly this plane

Forget to mention the motor firewall is a 3mm solid metal !! not so easy to just swap to another brushless motor.

You may refer to this link for more info about this plane :

Did you mean the aileron stick already at the CENTER rather than end point ?

It could be some binding at the aileron or the push rods from the servo to the horns too.

oh, what i mean is that when my aileron stick is on the right extreme of the TX, i still can hear the servo running inside the plane.

                            is this normal?

                            thankx!

thankx for the warning bro, yes i'm awre this is definitely NOT a beginners' plane. with rudder & flaps involved this is a COMPLETE real plane simulation.

yes, the stock motor is a weird kind of its own...3 hole mounting very rare indeed. i did thought of changing the whole motor / esc after i mastered it (provided it never crash!). i'll cut away the thick steel plate & modify a new firewall accordingly...

                              thankx!
