Check out this blog by one of the editors working at GoPro. Abe is the main guy behind their promo videos.

Stemming from the amount of interest on my first post – Understanding your New GoPro – I decided to dive a little deeper into some of the other aspects of the GoPro HERO3 Black Edition.…

Personally I would not use Protune unless I am planning on doing alot of colour correction/grading. GoPro in it's auto setting is good enough for most things.
The modes I normally use for video:

Day: 1080 50/60p. Medium FOV to reduce fish eye distortion and also to lessen the prop and landing gears from coming into frame if you are using a gimbal. Narrow FOV if you are shooting a subject eg Human, cars etc...
50/60p allows you to slow down the footage if editing in 25/30p video timeline without loosing any frames and get the cool slow mo effect. It will also lessen the jello effects of the CMOS lens.

Night: 1080 25/30p. Same FOV as above but at lower framerate. This is to allow more light to enter reducing the amount of noise you see in the footage. Noise will still be present, but not as much. Never use Protune for Night shoots unless you have a good noise reduction plug-in in your editing software. Otherwise you will have a very grainy and noisy footage which you will have a hard time correcting. I found out the hard way when I accidentally shot a night flight at 1080 60p with Protunes on. The end result was pretty bad and it ruined an otherwise nice video.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can try shooting at 2.7k. The footage will turn out extremely beautiful but you may need to do some cropping to remove any props or landing gears in the footage if you are using a gimbal. But shooting at a higher resolution allows you to still maintain the image quality even after zooming if your output is 1080p.

Thks guile, I find Gopro cannot do night shoot with video mode in ball room, exterior garden, night driving, living room etc (lot of noise).

Anyone experience user having this problem?

GoPro sensor works best with lots of light otherwise confirm will have noise...but Hero 3 Black Edition is a lot better than Hero 2. It is the limitations of the sensor. Can't be helped either way. Unless you mount a powerful LED light that has a long throw and wide spread to brighten up the area.

Typically it will look like this.

Here are some samples shot at 1080 30p with Protune on.

        Protune enabled raw footage.

        Protune enabled after post processing.

The first picture shown limitation and inperfectness. Any low res or fps can counter this? Both video and picture taking.
