Yes... Hard Disk motor is a brushless. Newer one is sensorless type. (3 wires) while the older one is using sensor type.

It is more easy to make your own Brushless motor from salvage CDROM motor. Hard Disk brushless motor normally make use of the casing as the base for holding the stator. With that, u can only use the stator. Not much u can do. I find the closest HDD motor u can use will be those SCSI HDD type.

          U can try u know..

The new hdd are like at 7200 rpm direct drive!
and if u look at the new SATA discs, they go up to 10,000rpm..
or scsci can go up to 13 or 15k even..
Now, that is some serious speed!

And with fluid bearings.. hehehe.. dunno how that works though..
          but it sounds nice..

I'm thinking it shld work for a samll foam flyer?

I haev a maxtor 7200 sitting around also..
          waiting to try it too!

isit necessary to do rewiring or replacement on stronger magnets on hdd motors?

not sure about those hdd motor..... looks small to me

Speed means nothing as it may not hava the required torque.... as for the hdd is working in close to frictionless environment. Whild in RC..... you are working again the gearbox and all the mechanical device.

Even the high speed CD-rom is usless without rewiring if you are planning to drive a large prop.

Based on experience with CD-rom, I should say is just for fun. As the end product will never as good as those sold on the market. Either too weak or too high amp. My old cd-rom motor for direct drive only able to handle 6" prop at almost 6 Amp at only 2S. While my AXI 2204 can drive up to 8" prop at only 4 Amp for 2S lipo. May be of my poor workmanship....

Strong magnet is good for making the cd-rom motor as a direct drive out runner....

                    hope it helps

Loyn: That was very helpful. Thanks.

I have already dismantled the HDs and took the magnets for my whiteboard and the rest of them dumped.

Another parts u can use is:
                        1 - Screws
                        2 - Bearing
3 - Crystalized Aluminium platter for use as plate.
