    esc heatsink question

Is it true that as the rating of esc increase, the need of heatsink become less significant ?

example, comparing a 25A esc with heatsink to a 80A esc without heatsink ?

i was looking at some big esc and notice most do not have any heatsink on them

can someone explain to me, thanks

    regards,

    interesting ques

But my cc85hv has a very big heat sink leh.......

But i was thinking, maybe the amp draw creates the heat on the esc and thus if u draw alot of amps then u create more heat ......

i say most don't have mah, but isn't that the reason to get a big esc to draw big amp ?
if draw a lot of amps = heat then bigger esc should need a even bigger heatsink ?

Does the capacitor in big esc also contribute to min the heat generated ?

It all depends on the esc design. Some esc has several mosfets paralleled together to share the current thus generating less heat and requiring a smaller heat sink. But this will bring up the cost of the esc.

Therefore, more/better mosfet = smaller heatsink and vice versa

It is up to the designer to balance the mosfet/heatsink equation and optimize the cost at the same time.

            Thanks bell206,
ok better mosfet = smaller heatsink, so meaning a heatsink is still necessary ?
i intent to get a better esc so no need to upgrade again.
i was doing a search on the jeti 77-o-heli esc and the quark airmaster 80.
there is no heatsink for the jeti compare to the quark with aluminum cooling case ?
quark price is about $40 less.

              Hi pilot_bear,
Sometimes a heatsink may not be absolutely necessary but is there to help dissipate heat to prolong the life of the components as heat is the no. 1 killer of electronic components. Or the esc may be located at a place where there's not enough airflow to properly cool it. Either way, a heat sink can only do good except that it will add weight to your heli.

I think the quark price is cheaper as most features have been fixed and user is not able to change them. I couldn't find the specs for the 77-o-heli but then again, specs alone doesn't tell the whole story. And whether an esc has heatsink or not does not mean it's better or worse. It depends on the whole design of the escs themselves.

Sorry I couldn't help you much.

                  for fans of jeti/hacker,

wrote to Hacker USA and got a replied from Chris.

"As for the heat sink on the 77-O-Heli it does not have a traditional heat sink with fins
but it does in fact have a heat sink plate which is under the label on the speed controller."

                  Now we know.
