Tips for using the RC Smoke System

New RC Smoke System from HK for RC models

The RC smoke system has now made its inception into the Hobbyking New Items website carrrying the RC smoke system from Regin. I have used the RC Smoke system before, on both the Catridge mount and smoke igniter on my electric plane. As they don't come cheap, I like to share some tips and review on how to make your investment more worthwile and fun flying with it without any expended the wrong way and gone down the drain. Most importanly, to get the best experience out from it since it should possibly soon be made available easily to the RC community internationally.

    1) Very much ideal for RC planes and on some RC cars. Rather inappropriate for helis.
    2) Avoid mounting the cartridge behind plane propellers. Running propellers in flight cause the cartridge to burn very much faster and makes the smoke writing in the sky appear thinner.
    3) If you got the mounting kit for the cartridges, make sure the mounts are properly and safely secured. This applies to internal ignitors as well, It is possible to install the mounting kits without causing permanent damage on the plane.
    4) Slow flying have a better smoke effect, longer smoke time and better smoke trail on the plane. Fast plane cause faster burns and 'thins' the smoke
    5) Choose a day with clear blue sky and windless day, preferable on a hot dry day. Drizzly day is a no go. Any cartridge colours looked best on a clear blue sky and if you only have a cloudy day to fly, choose coloured cartridges rather than white smoke. White smoke looked bad on an overcasted and cloudy day.
    6) Always prepare to launch the very minute if you light the cartridge manually. Precious smoke time will be wasted if you are holding a smoking plane on the ground while still looking for your transmitter lanyard or doing other silly trivials.
    7) If using 2 cartridges at one go (i.e., mounting each on both ailerons), choose contrasting colours for better effect . Using one dark colour and one light colour cartridge works best.
    8) Always keep the end burn tip of the cartridge away from any fuseleage of the plane. Heat and firing cartridge may tap over and cause burn and damage on your plane.
    9) Moisture is a big enemy of your cartridges! Keep them in a dry box or in a plastic bag with silica gels and open them for use only at the field. You will either have difficulty lighting them up or they will cause incomplete burns if affected by moisture.
    10) The cartridges are not light weight at all. They affect CG and adds weight to your plane. Always check your CG prior to flight with the mounted cartridges and preferably, as close or spot on at the CG of the plane. If need be, add counterweight to compensate the change in CG
    11) The RC smoke are generally non toxic smoke products but coloured cartridges can stain your RC planes, clothings and even your car. Be careful to avoid staining before, during and after use.
    12) If you have the dough, go for 2,500 cubic feet instead of the 1,200 cubic feet ones. They have a thicker smoke burn visually and have a longer smoke time. The only penalty is a heavier plane.
    13) Flying with white smoke gets easily dull over time. Choose an asortment for colours to go with your plane to make your smoke writing more colourful (though coloured ones are more costly).
    14) As these are flammable items, always practise safety before, during and after use. Keep your ignitors and lighters safely and dispose all expended cartridges responsibly

Hope the above helps for anyone getting the smoke system to spice things up. Any former users can also share or contribute their comments if any.

    Happy smoking!
