Medical problem/SAF downgrade

Hi Guys,

I currently have lower back pain for more than a month liao. My company doctor send me for x-ray and he diagnose that I have Arthritis in my lower back(please dont laugh, I know for my age I should not have this). He referred me to a bone specialist at Raffles Hospital. He also diagnose the same thing!!! They r now carrying out blood test for me n the result will be out near my birthday. I am now attending physiotherapy sessions to correct my posture and prevent the stiffening of my lower back.

As I had not cleared my IPPT for this work year n with my current condition, I'm in no shape to take IPPT. I spoke to my company doctor abt it n he said I do not have to worry abt IPPT for the rest of my life with my this condotion. The specialist will not write a letter until my results r out.

How am I going to let SAF know of my condition??? Who do I contact??? My ICT already over until the next year.

I did my IPPT during my ICT n had a partial failure, only fail chin-up.

My birthday 23/11, I see my specialist 21/11 for the blood test results.

Now how??? Any advise???




As I was referred to Raffles Hospital by my company doctor n my company is not paying much for my injury, how do I go to cheaper specialist??? My 1st visit to Specialist is S$240!!! Subsequent visits S$84 w/GST. My physiotherapy is S$84 w/GST per visit n I need to go every week!!!

Any cheaper options???

Yo, I was an IPPT spec last time, so maybe I can help you a lil on it la

It actually depends on ur ippt window. The window's open from ur bdae to the day before ur next bdae, so u got 1 yr to whack it. As for exemption from IPPT for that yr, u gotta have an MC that excuses u for more than 6months.

BUT if u kena MC like, after 6 months your window has opened, u better head down and ask ur chief clerk. Everything also depends on ur S3 la. My S3 back then was so damn strict, he argued that a guy got bloody lots of chances to take when his window just open.

Best thing, get ur specialist to write a letter, head down to the MO and downgrade. remember to photocopy ur letter (at least 3-4 copies), cos the chance of the med centre losing ur paper is 90%, no jokes.

always ask the chief clerk la, that's the best... hope this helps

All I had was a MRI scan report and a letter from a GP which got me into the medical board.

Then will book IPPT n go there report sick.

1st wana buy 9C.

Then Company Doc told me the bad news.

Then Specialist confirm the bad news.

Now lots of ??? over my head

Sorry to hear about your condition Adrian. Me pes C2 for more than 10 years already, exempted from IPPT forever, only sail with ship during ICT. My condition also lower back pain. I remember my company doctor referred me to SGH and the specialist there wrote a letter to navy medical center. I was then placed on SAF medical board review for 3 years, eventually the board gave up on me and asked if i can still sail, I said sailing no problem but no IPPT please.

Some 4 years ago, Tuas medical center suddenly remember my case, I thought they were going to put me on review again, to my surprise, they just want to tell me "Sir, we have tried but your upgrading has been disapproved, you will be C2 forever, the case is now closed."

So have u cleared ur ippt for ur work year? If not, then go back to the doc again, get him to write excuse letter for u. You need to inform your Unit manpower branch i think. Then u can also check www.miw.gov.sg for details. Important thing is to update the main admin side of your status.

adrianli...jst call your reserve unit chief clerk..and arrange a time to see the MO...after seeing MO with your referral letter..they might schedule you for a medical board...

The problem here is the Specialist I'm seeing now do not wana write any letter until my blood test report is out. Which will be on the day I visit him again 21/11. My birthday window is until 23/11 leh. Its very close dont know how to tell SAF. During my last ICT IPPT, I had a partial failure, failed chin up only. So I need to take chin up n clear my IPPT liao. But with my current condition, I'm not able to do that!!! If I were to take it, I doubt the PTI there will allow me too and SAF will have another statistic of an injured personnel while taking IPPT!!!


One bro at another forum advised me to go to a Polyclinic to get a referral to a govt hospital bone specialist for lower medical cost and book an IPPT date then go to that IPPT camp to report sick on the day of the IPPT test. By the way he was a former CO of one of the SAF camp. Very nice n helpful guy, spoke to him on the phone.


My current reservist unit very good, everyday eat, sleep n read newspaper or some shopping at e-mart!!! Therefore after I get my downgrade I still wana go back to my unit!!!

How many in-camp have you done? New ruling is 10 yrs, if you close to that then I chance you can "Siam". I just got my letter for SCDF few months back, I put under reserve list

I only done two ICT, still got 8 more to go!!!

But I love my reservist leh. Go there like go holiday chalet. Having a break from work!!! Its a place where I can relax n not stressed by my work.

Without reservist, everyday same routine very sian.
