    Hi! :D

Hello everyone! I am a newbie here at DH so I'd just like to introduce myself

I'm James, 14 years old studying in ACS(I'd tell which one but PRIVACY ) and I'm in a CCA which INVOLVES rc planes(woo secondary sch!) so I want to learn how to build, fly and stuff like that :P.

Anyways, I've got a few questions, could you all answer them? :P
    1) Where do most of you buy your planes? Or do you mainly scratchbuild?
    2) Where can I get foam core? XP
    3) Should I get a Tx Rx set along with a plane soon?
    4) Is it possible to spraypaint a scratchbuild? Will it affect the aerodynamics?

Thanks all and looking forward to meeting you!
Oh and oh snap... I live in Bukit Timah.. that'sa LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG drive...

    Hi James!

What a coincidence! I learnt how to fly rc in a secondary school too! Here are some answers to your questions.

    1) Where do most of you buy your planes? Or do you mainly scratchbuild?
Most of us buy planes from the hobbyshops in Fook Hai Building. Some of us scratchbuild our own planes after we have learnt more about flying our planes. It is recommended you start by buying a plane, then learning to build rather than the other way round.

    2) Foam core is available at Art Friend, in Bras Basah road. If else, you can styrofoam from most stationery stores around the neighbourhood. Some shops like Popular Bookstore and Evergreen stationery also carry it.

    3) It is recommended you get a TX/RX along with an ARF plane. I recommend the Multiplex Easystar from NTC hobbies, Basement 1, Fook Hai Building.

    4) It is always possible to spraypaint a scratchbuilt, but I don't recommend you start the hobby with scratchbuilding. Spray painting, yes. Some types of paint can 'eat' styrofoam (don't ask me how I know). Tamiya spray paints are safe to use.

      James,

If your cca involves rc planes, doesnt it mean you can get assistance from your teachers? Or is it merely a small proportion of it?

      Answers to your q's,

      1. A number of places, but the de facto ones are in Fook Hai Building (ask ur father)
      2. Art Friend
      3. Without a Tx and Rx, u are stuck to doing free flight. So... it's a no brainer?
      4. Yes it is possible. Aerodynamically negligibly affected if at all.

I think there are people flying at Old Holland Road or something, nearer to your place. Otherwise, quite far actually.

Hi Sunstorm and csisfun! Thanks for welcoming me
Just a question, shouldnt I get a beginner's plane first before the easystar? and if not, how much is the easystar? :P
And Sunstorm, I've seen spraypaint eat styrofoam... I built a boat that way!
I've been to Fook Hai before, marvelled at an SR-71 EDF and decided I was too much of a noob for it :P In fact, when i start to build planes the first one I'm going to build is from mikeysrc (www.mikeysrc.com) He actually has free plans I looked at around 3 years ago :P
Oh and there are people flying at Old Holland Road!? YAY!!!!!
For my third question I was refering o should I get my OWN tx/rx and plane because the sch has two cessnas for competitions :P I'm pursueing this as more of a hobby than a cca so asking all these stuff hehe.
        Thanks for your advice!
        Flew!

          Ans to your qn:

          1) Easystar = about 100 - 200 dollars, I think. Save your upcomng ang pow money, if you are chinese. You need to set aside 400 bucks for your gear, which includes tx, rx, batteries, charger and whatever other things.

          2) There are people flying at OHR. I sometimes go down. Go in the mornings during weekends about 9-10.

          3) Yes, you should get your own TX/RX and planes. I won't really recommend sharing with a club.

Alas, I am 84/φ ^3 years old and I am leaving the surly bonds of earth. I have lived a full life and thus have no regrets. I have enjoyed RC for many years, and, alas, things have changed from the days we used to check our frequency, pull out antennas and plug in NiCd cells that run brushed motors.

This is the greatest basis of pass-it-on. Before I die, I seek, in the greatest of my abilities, only to pass on my equipment which I would have no use for in a mere few years when I get the call from a person who I cannot refuse. The day I put out my hand, and [touch] the face of God.

And also remember to strengthen the foam, especially the wings.
