Case of the suicide pact by 8 teens in S'pore: Coroner's enquiry reveals reason

HE WAS their leader and he told them that they had an important mission.

World War III was coming and their task was to destroy demons and save the world.

But in order to do so, they had to die first and be resurrected as slayers.

The seven teenagers were so convinced by what Ku Witaya, 16, said that they agreed to join him in a suicide pact.

Witaya and Sia Chan Hong, also 16, went ahead with the plan to kill themselves.

They jumped out of the window of Witaya’s room, fell nine floors and died. But the others, on seeing their bodies, backed out.

Yesterday, these shocking details were revealed at the joint coroner’s inquiry into their deaths.

Two members of the group, John, 17, and David, 16, took the stand and related why they had agreed to the suicide pact.

We are not using their real names as there is a court order not to name the surviving members of the pact.

When Deputy Public Prosecutor Ang Feng Qian asked David what prompted Witaya to raise this idea, he replied: “He wanted to prove to others what he believed, (whether) it was the truth or just imagination.”

State Coroner Victor Yeo then asked if the only way to prove Witaya’s theory was to commit suicide.

David replied: “Because there is no other way. It’s the reality world... no other way to prove a spiritual thing.”

He added that all of them had hesitated at some point about joining the suicide pact because “every human fears death”.

David said they eventually gave in because “all of us wanted to find the evidence of slayers”.

The boys appeared to be so absorbed in Witaya’s beliefs that their answers to the court often seemed bizarre.

These are some of the exchanges that took place yesterday:

DPP Ang: How did you all prepare for World War III?

John: Previously we failed a few times... for World War III to come, so we try to work harder at meditating. We spent four hours a day for meditation.

Mr Yeo: So what was supposed to happen after the World War appeared?

John: We would use our bodies to fight demons and everyone can see.

DPP Ang: Why do all of you have to die to fight demons?

John: (So that) more chances to let World War appear. We would go to heaven and don’t have to stay on earth to wait for World War to appear.

Mr Yeo: Why do you all want World War to appear?

John: Firstly, to see what we’d been preparing for the past years (come true). This world has changed... a lot of greediness.

DPP Ang: Did Witaya tell you how to prepare yourself to fight the demons?

John: Get ready and try to remember the dream, and to go to sleep at the time given.

DPP Ang: What do you know about the wars and the demons?

    John: ...(Gives a blank look)

Mr Yeo: So in the dreams you’re supposed to fight the demons?

    John: Yes.

DPP Ang: What were your feelings with regards to the suicide pact?

John: (giggles) Maybe fun. (giggles again)

Mr Yeo: Can you elaborate (on fun)?

    John: (Silence)

Mr Yeo: You were OK to it?

    John: Yes.

Mr Yeo: You were not afraid?

    John: (shakes his head)

Mr Yeo: Can I ask you why?

John: When you believe in something, you’ll just do it.

The court heard that Witaya, a child medium, was the one who came up with the idea.

Witaya, a Secondary Three student, started performing trances about two to three years before the incident.

His grandmother had also performed trances since she was about 30 years old after an accident in which she fell down and broke her arm.

Witaya believed that he could communicate with the “Gods of Heaven and Hell”.

He would go into trances every Friday and would allow the Gods to possess him.

In early 2006, six of Witaya’s friends found out about his “special abilities” after seeing him in a trance.

Since then, they would meet at Witaya’s flat every Friday to conduct rituals and to meditate. Also in the group was Witaya’s younger brother.

They treated the place as a temple, which they named Sheng Long Fu (Mandarin for House of the Almighty Dragon) and over time, the group became close.

They agreed to Witaya becoming their leader.

John and David said that after Witaya and Chan Hong fell to their deaths on 23 Aug last year at about 5.30am, they decided to lie to the police.

They agreed to say they had gone for supper and did not know what had happened.

When asked by DPP Ang why they did that, David said: “We were trying to hide the slayer stuff, because nobody would believe us.”

Three of the boys had also kept diaries, which contained their imaginary thoughts and daily events.

One of the entries was entitled, “last day”.

After their friends jumped, the boys hid the diaries in the utilities closet outside the flat.

John said: “If the others read these, they would think we are mentally not there.”

But investigators found inconsistencies in their statements and two days later, the boys decided to come clean.

David explained: “Because I know that the truth would be out eventually.”

One year after their friends’ deaths, how did David and John feel about their beliefs?

John told the court he still believed in Chinese gods, but not in slayers.

Explaining the change, he said: “After they died, we did not see any evidence (of them becoming slayers to save the world).

As for David, he told the court: “(My) trust faded because there were no results I could see in reality.”

The court heard that some members of the group were avid players of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and “World of Warcraft”.

However, there was no evidence the games had influenced the suicide pact.

    The inquiry continues today.

Teens couldn't get to roof, some change their minds

THE eight boys, including Ku Witaya’s younger brother, had made a pact to hold hands and jump off the roof of the block.

And the consequences would have been unimaginable – if the door had not been locked.

When the boys, aged 12 to 17 at the time, could not gain access to the roof, one boy backed out and went home. Five others later changed their minds.

The court heard that on 21 Aug last year, Witaya first suggested the idea of committing suicide to some members in the group.

He told them that World War III was coming and they had to “sacrifice” themselves to be resurrected as slayers to kill demons and save the world.

As not all members were present, the suicide pact was not carried out.

Two days later, at about 2am, Witaya again brought up the idea after the group attended a barbecue at Pasir Ris Park.

One of them got petrified and advised the rest against doing it. He later left the park while the remaining eight proceeded to Block 667, Jalan Damai, in Bedok Reservoir, where Witaya lived on the ninth floor.

The court heard that the eight boys made their way up to the rooftop of the 12-storey block, having agreed to jump off together.

But their plan was thwarted as the entrance to the rooftop was locked.

They decided to return to Witaya’s flat

where another boy backed out and left for home.

Inside Witaya’s room, the remaining seven decided to take turns to jump from the window. They could not do it together because the window ledge, measuring
about 1m by 0.5m, was not big enough to accommodate all of them.

It was decided that Witaya and Chan Hong should go first, followed by another three, and then the remaining two.

Witaya and Chan Hong climbed out onto the window ledge and squatted there. But twice they returned to the room as they hesitated.

    Afraid

John testified that Chan Hong was afraid and Witaya tried to calm him down.

When they got onto the ledge about 10 minutes later for the third time, they were seen holding hands and by the count of three, they leapt off the ledge.

The next three boys then climbed onto the ledge for their turn.

At this point, they heard Chan Hong moaning and shouting in pain below.

The five boys decided to abort the plan and go to check on Chan Hong.

One of them called for an ambulance. Witaya was pronounced dead at the scene and Chan Hong died at Changi General Hospital about two hours later.

I saw it on the news last night, really did not expect such things to still happen in Singapore.

2 young lives wasted. Quite a pity.
Stop looking for a gyro in my plane, they are all in the head.

That Witaya kid must be a genius. Someone so young and yet so charismatic, he can lead so many people to commit suicide.

i think he 走火入魔Zou Huo Ru Mo(went into the wrong path) alr... coz some of the ppl are born wit the ability to converse and interact with the "outer realms"... and if they dun have the mind to control their ability they will loose their senses....

somemore if he nv join or talk with those experience temple or shrine mediums... he may not have been able know how to control himself and prevent himself from losing himself....

some when someone is abt 80-100percent being controlled by an "outer realm being"... they need helpers or even someone with some basic knowledge to keep them "safe" from danger and to bring them back for beginneers...

juz sharing what i know larhx... maybe some of this info that i know is wrong...and some other ppl can correct me... but please dun turn this thread into arguing that there is no such things as "outer realms" kinda stuff...coz definitely got some ppl believe and some ppl dun...

You know the medium trance practice. Growing up here, I know of uncles who pick up such practice when they were young men. I did not quite expect to hear young folks like ones in this case picking up medium trance practice so readily.

oh i see... I've also heard of army friends who were involved in such religious stuff but never knew much details about such cultures even though it's right next door to me when i was growing up.

My army friend always said he was a rat in his past life and that he could smell ghosts... instead of the more common seeing of ghosts. And he really sounded like he wasn't trying to BS me.
Really got all sorts of people with all sorts of beliefs.

Your're right. I've had my fair share of such experience during my army days, in fact even till today.. There are people who's really so engross with their thought and believe that they ended up shutting themself off and started to behave defensively.. and some may even snap during trivial conversation.. and all of us will like.. look at one another and ask what was it that anyone one of us have said that made him snap..

Look.. These kids have noble thoughts.. like taking their own life so that they can be demon slayer in their next life to save the world from world war III.. Imagine anyone else try to convince them otherwise.. They'll turn a deaf ear as they think they're right and all other's are being manipulated, and it's for them to save the people.. Kids are after immature and naive, and it's really unfortunately for them to not have people around to talk them out of their silly thought..

Well.. I'm just glad I've got friends around..
