that was at the old hong kong airport, which i believe is called kai tak. the airport is right in the city and is surrounded by mountains. it was known as one of the hardest approaches in the world. the aircraft has to make a daring tight 90deg turn in the valley to line up with the runway, after sighting the infamous HK checkerboard, and the pilot has to do it at very low height. the old videos of the planes flying over the buildings is frm kaitak approaches. passengers could see the people working on their laundry.

this airport took alot of skill to come into, and many planes suffered the same fate as the one above, if not worse. if i'm correct, this particular plane's pilot overshot the turn and had a no2 engine strike. the engine and the landing gear had to be replaced.

and according to a friend, who's a retired SIA 747 captain, the only harder approach was the one into kathmandu(sp?), the capital of nepal. there, the mountains are even worse, and the airport is also in a valley, so there's only one way in, and one way out. to make things harder, it is at a very high altitude, and the air is very thin.

But nothing beats the operational heli pilot in Australia when I am their passenger inside the SUPER PUMA, that one heart is at throat.

the nepal one is not as dramatic as old kaitak. its just a very hard approach. any wrong calculations and you hit the mountains
