    Most Incredible Model Engine Ever!

    http://archive.dstc.edu.au/BDU/staff...y/croft/eagle/

alright for those who don't know, the eagle 22 was the last piston aero engine made by rolls royce and is probably its most powerful. here's a guy who's made a 1/5 scale workable model complete with superchargers, fuel injection units and even a working coffman starter that uses rifle calibre bullets to start the engine.

in very large piston aero engines, the engines were started by something called a coffman starter. no electric motor would be practically big enough to start such large engines. a coffman starter uses cartriges of five charges, which are bassically shotgun shells. they were individually connected to the cockpit. in order to start the engine, the shells were fired one by one, creating incredible pressures upwards of 2000psi to power the starting piston. even for such large engines, the power of the piston was only for less than one stroke, but was so powerful that it could turn the engine over for a few strokes. if the engine did not start after all five shells had been fired, the engine would need to be inspected because of the incredible strain made by the coffman starter

Watch the show The Flight of the Phoenix and you will understand. Some of our modellers need this sort of starter every weekend including our club's lawnmower. You want a free workout, come to Potong Pasir FF. Lotsa big engines to test your arms. Multinational beauties. US, Hungarian, Japanese, German, Italian etc. ( DA, Moki, Fuji, 3W,Tigre)

means the engine everything only can start 5 times ?

                Nice engine.

Variable pitch some more (I think).

As for the firing to start... it is similar to the movie "Flight of the Phoenix (2004)"

yes its notonly variable pitch but has an in-built mechanical constant speed regulator. moreover, its not a single set of props but a contrarotating set of two props.

yea you can see the main actor loading the shotgun shells into the engine.

if i'm correct, the engine in that movie was a wright turbo compound. the exhaust is so powerful that there are three turbines to tap the power to spin the prop. the turbines alone were almost 600hp.
