Frankly speaking, A123 is good for 600 size heli and above. In elec heli, u want it to be as light as possible. A123 is too heavy for any heli below 600 size. It might have the power to fly the heli but I dont thing the power to weight ratio is good.
Jus my humble opinions.
Anyway, A123 bought over Enerland so there would be a new type of batts in the market soon. Jus lookout for it. Hearsay its a A123 in li-po packaging.
Thanks Guys.
Quite true it should be heavy.
Today I just saw someone fly a Trex450 look alike, on 3s A123. He was doing forward flights, inverted and the punch is good, very good I feel. His flight time was 5min+ .... which is why I started the thread.
But looking at it, maybe its because right gearing was used. For the lower voltage, a higher gear should be used. So maybe thats why the Trex450 look alike flew so well ....
imho 3s a123 can be heavier but given the lipo's discharge capability, you can easily get like a scorpion 2221-8 or even 2221-6 and gear it 15T, throw in a 45/50A ESC, and 335 blades (miniT!) it should be good to go.
hi i'm flying my mini titan on 3s a123 using scorpion 2221-8 on 15t pinion
i only fly 4 to 4 1/2 mins putting in about 1500mah back to the pack.
power is enough for me.
maybe you can ask john3330 about opinion.he saw me fly it.
Yup saw him fly on Align 325 woodies with no problems.. Although it feels on the heavy side, he is still able to pull off most of the moves with not much problems.. At first i thought of getting A123 but the set up have to be different from lipo and the feel is different so its either A123 all the way or Lipos..

0.o HK2221-8 ah? I thought its Hk2221-6 for the A123.. The HK2221-8 on 15T sure seems like the -6..

agree with this...i think a123's popularity was spurred on by the bigger electrics, because of the ridiculous battery prices required by that size. they were used in trying to get a good balance with the price you have to pay and the power you wanted your heli to have.
on the smaller electrics, (just my opinion) don't need a123's because of the cheap cost of their battery requirements anyway. performance of lipos on these small birds will still be better than a123, power-to-weight ratio being considered.
yup.
for sure lipo still perform better on 450 size.
the power is enough for me so i just go the heavier way plus i'm using 3s 2p a123 on my trex500 so it actually keeps my battery inventory smaller.
Results:
5 mins flight time (FFF, flips and rolls, collective punching)
HS ~ 3000.
about 4min 30 secs of good flight, the last 30s abit lose HS liao. the punch is about the same as my Lipos on 13 teeth. didnt really feel the extra weight. notice the higher CG, i think it makes the heli roll abit faster. so far quite a keeper set up for me.
according to Helifreaks, the optimum setup i think would be CC45 with Scorpion 2221-6 on 13 teeth. but i no money to experiment with new setup. kekeke.
I have used A123 before, so maybe I can give abit of comments.
A123 is faster to charge with than Lipo, but your charger has to be able to pump in high amps.
A123 has constant power, but after using lipo, I dont find significant differences, maybe my level of flying not there, or maybe I am disciplined with my flight time.
A123 is supposed to be more hardy and tougher, this I will agree. Dont believe use a lipo and an A123 cell and hit them on your head till either breaks. A123 will outlast lipo and your head.
A123 is supposed to have longer lifespan thank lipo. This I never had the chance and endurance to try out yet.
