Hey there, here's my 2 cents worth.....
From my exp, it's not so much as personal pref if you are a newbie to helis', as you will not know any different.
However, mode 2 will be better (in mine and alot of top 3-D pilots opinion) in the long run due to the fact that all your cyclics are one hand/side (right), so that you will not get the dreaded mental "cross cyclic" interference associated with mode 1. It's also easier (in my opinion again) to 3-D with mode 2....

So basically, it depends on what stlye you want to fly in the long run i guess.
    SST-Eagle Freya 90 Evo
    OS 91 SZH-Hyper
    Fut GY-611 + S9256 on tail
    2 x Fut S-9250 on cyclics
    Fut S-9351 on pitch
    Fut S-9451 on throttle
    Hattori 9HNS-2 pipe
    Voltspy on board batt checker
    MS CF tail blades

Sorry for the late reply !

I started RC in the late seventies (Aircraft) and back then, ALL RC TX were mode 1 (Asian countries anyway) after that many years of flying mode 1 you may say the instincts have been imprinted into me.
When I got into heli, I started with mode 2, but having too many crashes going into FF as my mode 1 instincts kicked in the moment things goes haywire, so I'm force to fly heli in mode 1.

For me, Mode 2 seems to be easier to fly a heli with and if you're not "mode 1 imprinted" going into FF with mode 2 should not be a problem.
On the other hand, mode 1 feels a little more accurate to me as the 2 main axis (lateral and Pitch) are separated.

It is certainly more easier for a Mode 1 flyer to pick up Mode 2 than for a Mode 2 guy to do Mode 1. It a matter of personal perference which mode you go with.

As I wrote earlier, I fly mode 3, and I've stuck to it. Tried changing to mode 1 and 2 before, but gave up in frustration.

When I got my PPL, I was still flying 'mode 3' but inside the cockpit.
The "Trainee's" seat in a Piper Warrior is "mode 3", BUT the "Instructor's" seat is "mode 2" !!!

            ....Same goes when you're seated in an F16, F15, SU-37 or Hind-D !

            Some food for thought !

Huh? U mean F16 and F15 is not right hand control stick and left hand throttle stick?

You are correct ! .....but in the PA-28 Piper Warrior aircraft, the Trainee sits on the left and operates the throttle located in the centre of the instrument console with his right hand. The instructor sits on the right and shares the same throttle, thus operating it with his left hand.

....Hope thats clearer for you !

You apparently know aviation. And I'm sure you know that the Instructor
is *not* the PIC. I'm more into civilian and not military aviation, so the left seat for me is the one that counts.

                  Cheers.

I think I can add two more to the list ..

Back from my days on the flight line the PC 9 and the AeroMacci jet is also on throttle is also on the right and if I remember right the CT4 is also.

Well, okay, .....I respect your opinion ...discussions like this usually gets nowhere, sorta like saying Left hand drive cars are better than right hand drive, etc etc.....

First position in 3DM Master's Class was Chen Zarfati from Israel flying the JR Vibe.
2nd was Nir Meiri, also from Israel, flying the MA Stratus
3rd was Hiroki Ito from Japan flying the JR Venture 90.

The list of competitors and the rankings an be found here.

Also check on rrTV. IT has some(tons in fact!) great videos from the 3D Masters. Unfortunately the videos are only of the Masters Class and not Expert's and Sportsman class
