    Getting Started on RC Helis

    Hi,

I've been interested in rc helicopters for quite sometime now and I thought I might wanne get started. However, being a newbie, I have no idea what I would need to get in order to get started.

There's two types of helicopters, oil and battery powered. What are their prices, performance comparisons?

I think I just ened some recommendations on some noob gear to get started. Any help is much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

1st - what is your budget? This is the most important thing...

2nd - Do you know that this is a long term hobby? (We don't want you to waste your money)

3rd - Have you seen any RC Heli perform before?

4th - Do you have any model that you want in mind?

        hi jeremyterabyte, welcome to dH..

glad to have another heli lover on-board..its always good to start with a budget to test the water..but as you proceed further, dont be surprise to see you budget growing out of proportion..but unfortunately, better products always come with a price..life is such

i would recommend honey bee, rather than the lama reason simply the former is a closer relative to the rest of the helis that you will proceed later on, either nitro or electric..both can help you with the orientation stage but honey bee would be harder to control, ie. greater satisfaction once you can manage it..and once you can handle the honey bee, i bet you will have more confidence handling bigger helis. lama would be more stable, but with proper trimming, honey bee is also a joy to fly.

and more importantly, visit those funfly or help somebody look at your setup during your initial flights..its always easier for someone to point to you what to look out for..

        my 2 cents..

Hmm, how about flying times? How long can these birds fly before running out of juice? I mean if I can only fly for only 5 mintues with every long charge, it would 'nt be really fun, now would it?

Also, where go I get those models? I have no idea where can I get helis. Hehe. Thanks for all yer replies!

              Frequency used in Sg

Is there a legal frequency to be used in Singapore? 35Mhz? 72Mhz?

US is 72Mhz while UK is 35Mhz.

              Thanks

So 35Mhz and 75Mhz are not allowed to be used in Sg?

                      hi jeremyterabyte,

since your budget is under $200, i would agree with chuan to start with a lama. Unlike convention helicopter with a tail rotor to counter-torque, it has a twin rotor to counter-torque, which makes it less likely to drift around. The lama is quite stable to a limit that it will drift around without the rotor disk titing much. you could get yourself the orientation of helicopters with the lama.

regarding your question abt the flight duration : It depends on the amp. of the battery used. (i dont quite know abt electric heli)

u could go to fook hai building to compare the different shops offering their products

Actually, I think I should be more specific with my needs. I am actually more inclined in getting one gas powered helicopter that can at least take 100g of load, on top of the helicopter's weight...

An electric heli gives me the impression that it can only fly for like a very short period of time.

An electric one will do, but how long can it fly?
