eh i dunno if you would consider those domes similar to the ones you posted earlier...they just look like a sump or cylinder for hydraulics that's all...

Ehh Brandon Chng... I thought u are very good at aerodynamics and aircraft? Look at the last picture of Mi-8. Does it look like cylinder to you? It looks more like Wok with alot of handle to me.

The real reason - no joke one - it is the cheapest way to protect the heli from lightning strike, by mounting the dome over sharp edges, it reduces the neutrons signature - therefore. reduces its ability to attract the lightning bolt

this is the most sensible answer so far ... imho, fact that electrons gathers the most at the tip of pointed objects.

Then the tail of the heli??? Its elevated n much higher up than the head.

                        wow lightning...very cheem...

super hornet:my guess is that could be just weights to stabilise the blades or just hydraulic resevoirs. the cylinder i meant is, the hydraulic piston and cylinder, where hydraulic pressure could be used to move stuff on the head like blade folding or even for unconventional collective. but its just my guess. i'm not a military analyst so i could never tell what it is exactly, and besides, there's no advantage to knowing it. it could just be life rafts for all we know if you're really interested, there's a mi8 at seletar all the time park on the apron, maybe you could ask the pilots and staff there or take some photos. they do forestry and skydiving.

sounds rather personal to me....discuss the topic..don't pass comments about an individual's knowledge....

I myself have tons of questions about some member's knowledge here in DH...I'd rather keep those comments to myself

I think right now so far those answer that I find sensible are:
1 - Umbrella or shield from rain/dirt/FOD (Foreign Object Debri) for all the linkages.
2 - Lightning protector... But what about tail?

As for Aerodynamic... maybe true for faster heli like Lynx or some of the Eurocopter. No really applicable for those HUGE heli like Super Stallion.

I try to dig out more data/explaination that I can. I wonder whether Jane's website got such info or not?

I just watched "Air Crash Investigation" on National Geographic Channel.

It is about a Super Puma (56 Charlie of Bristol for transporting oil rig worker) crash into the middle of ocean (near British)

The cause of the crash was due to lightning strike onto the tail rotor blades (Carbon fiber blades)

BTW, Super Puma also has the dome on top of the rotor head.
