    Taking it Slow......

As I await my hot babes to arrive.....if and when they arrive, I still needed some stick time to refresh on how to program a transmitter and all the other stuff that I seemed to have been forgotten. I decided to get myself a gentle lady with smooth lines. So I visited Hyperflight which seems to stock a lot of Vladimir's very nice and juicy models. Having previously flown a mini graphite, I knew Vladimir's models won't disappoint.

I wanted something you can toss around while also being able to thermal at a relaxing pace. I landed on the Sprite Thermal Electric. 5 days after placing the order the box arrives with a loud neon orange bird. Nice and visible against a blue sky.

The build was impeded by having

    1. The wrong motor.....the MVVS would not fit.
    2. Non digital tail servos. Not that hit really mattered....but a nice bird deserves nice innards.

Space in this bird is tight. So no dreams of some humongous power system. (Its suppose to be a gentle lady). However, I did want a rather spirited climb so I opted for something in the 700 watt range. Visiting e calc I landed on something german with a 4.4 gearbox. That also meant a new ESC I did not have....

Oh well, best to invest upfront and transfer gear from bird to bird later.

1 week later after the bird arrives....the motor arrived followed by the servos.

The build took about 1 week of late nights and one weekend and a very late Friday nite before the maiden day. Generally straight forward until I realized why I wasn't getting enuf throws on the aileron.....I forgot to notch the subspar to give more room for the linkage to move...

With everything all setup....I arrived at the field at 8.15 am and waited for my Flight instructor to show up to help me maiden this beauty.
Launch was uneventful as the plane jumped right out of my Instructors hands with a slight toss. The planed ballooned like no tomorrow. Down trim down trim. For a moment I did not like the way the plane handled as it kept doing the porpoise. After taming it down, I took it for a few laps to get a feel of the plane. Just to vouch for the quality of the plane, I did not have to trim the ailerons or rudder 1 click....only the elevator gave me trouble. So I decided to land the plane and got rid of the AAA battery used as tail weight (12 grams in all). Reset the elevator zero via sub trim and zeroed the trims.

2nd flight was so much better, a slight ballon on power up and she settle nicely into the wind. Full power was only on for about 10 seconds top and she was almost starting to get hard to see. The visual signature of this 2m bird is somewhat smaller than the mini graphite. Landing with crow was also a little unsettling as it had a habit of pitching up sharply. The plane landed in 1 piece thankfully after the 2nd flight.

In the evening, I went out again with new set of trims and throws especially on the elevator. This time round she lept into the sky straight and true with no ballooning. I pointed her into the wind and cambered the flaps and ailerons to 6 degrees and watched her gently glide effortlessly around the gloomy sky. A steep dive also showed no ballooning tendencies. Good....finally the plane is settling into the way I like it to fly. A few rolls also showed her to be axial, rather than barrelling around like in the morning.

    She's a keeper.

    Setup
Ailerons and Flaps - MKS Servos
Rudder and Elevator - Hyperion Servos
    Motor - B408L with 4.4 gearbox
    Prop - 14.5 x 10
    ESC - Jeti
    Battery - 3s 2250mah
    Tail lead - 42 grams
    AUW - 1366 grams

Woahahaha.. i din know you ordered this ! :p

yeah. came across some review commenting "maindening Sprite is anti climax"

mvvs can get in.. must use the version without the fan. ie. not the sport version.
i am using the 3,5 960kv (too slow for your liking la.. hahaah)

about pitching up on crow, yeah i need to put in a 100% elevator mixed down on this bird :p

    definitely a keeper !

Yesterday I encountered my very first servo failure. When I pulled up on the elevator stick, The elevator would move up but when it returned towards neutral, it would go past neutral and than return back to neutral. So I continued to fly(dumb move)

Flight was controllable for a while than it got worst. It will have a mind on its own and start moving without any input from the TX. Managed to bring the plane down safely. On the ground, I jiggled the servo and than it was fine. UP in the air again it showed up 2 mIn later in flight. Brought it down, jiggle and gone. Up 1 more time. And this time I think the bad servo drew sO much current it affected my ailerOns too. Activated crow for an emergency landIng. Went home , did surgery on the offending servo. Replaced with new one. Let's see how the new one performs.

Any experts here can comment based on the servo behavior?

The servo on my heli ever move on its own when the throttle was above 40% baffled me for sometime until a bro here told me abt checking the servo wires . Then i found that one part of the servo wires was exposed although not shorted to anything .

                    Diet Sprite

What bothered me most about the sprite was it was sluggish with my current setup. It lumbered in the turns when I used the rudder and it would suddenly nose dive during a turn. At about 1400grams, and 12.7oz/sqft wing loading....that could be the problem. To add to the problem i had 45 grams of weight in the tail. That made the tail very sluggish

So it was time to develop a Diet Sprite. I had to make the nose lighter to get rid of the tail weight. So to get rid of the 45 grams in the tail, I had to make the nose about 150 grams lighter.

So out came the B40 and in went a A20 6XL - Save 70 grams
Out came the 2250 mah 3s battery and in went a 1350mah prolite - 100 grams saved.
Out came the ESC and in went a lighter smaller ESC - 20 grams saved.
Out came the 45 grams tail weight too.

Walla......235 grams shaved off out of 1400grams.....~15% weight savings. Pretty significant. AUW is now 1180grams.

How does she fly now.....launches were a little slower but spirited enough to get you to soaring height in under 8 seconds. And she is more agile with her tail. With weight loss at the tail and nose, she is more responsive on the turns as there is less intertia to overcome. And she floats better too.

Now if I change the servos in the wing.....I can shave off another 80 grams
Drill a few lightening holes in the wing maybe another 100grams

Thanks to RT9 for introducing me to a the really nice A20XL. Sweetest little motor around.

I think you need to have a balance of not being to heavy and not too light. Its all about wing loading and the type of performance you are looking for.

I mentioned taking weight away from the extremeties from the plane to improve handling and agility. As an example, If you were ice skating, and I gave you 2 1kg dumbells in each hand, you than do some manuovers with dumbells in hand with arms outstretched and with arms close to your body....which would you do??? Hands outstretched or hands close to your body???

But being too light also means you are at the mercy of the wind blowing the plane all over the sky.

Thats why pure gliders come with ballast to weight the plane according to the conditions you fly in.

Reducing weight helps you float.....but where you remove the weight on the plane improves handling. So depends on your objectives. I was looking for both. But I would not fly this plane on a gusty windy day. Too Light.

then wings must be light = )

Actually it depends on the plane and what you want it to do. No hard and fast rule...but light wings never hurt.

Adding weights to balance the plane is adding dead weight. make it a motor or battery

                              Holes in the wing?!?
I usually fly my Sprite (I call her the Pink Peril) with a lot of rudder mix - 40% from memory plus the full 4 aileron wing. Flaps mixed only to about say 25%. Gives you a lot more authority. Cores nicely. With this setup, it can get almost as playful as my Blaster 2e DLG. Haven't tried any Aileron diff but probably should. Rt9's right. The A20XL geared is a pretty nice motor (thx Ron, you know you are a real gem).
Hawkeye, what prop did you end up swinging?
