    Tornado 17 Nitro Boat

Hi Guys, great to see Stuka's SMS business kicking off this weekend

His "FOC for one day only" rescue services would have sure come in handy when GF maidens her Tornado 17!! But she can only run it during the nitro slot in the afternoon, so their paths would have to cross another time

Anyway, this boat arrived from an Australian (Queensland) supplier on Monday via Ozzy Post. It's made by a company called "Purple Light" in China. The news is, if China keeps up the quality I've seen on this boat, Kyosho had better watch out

Although the boat came fully assembled with a 2 channel radio installed, I dis- and re-assembled everything to make sure it was all aligned and properly lubed. Also replaced the radio with GF's Flash 4 FM system that was previously used in her Kyosho Jet Arrow electric. The engine in the Tornado is an ASP .15 marine with in-line clutch... rated at about 500w @ 17,000. Should be crusin around the 20mph range. There's lots of room available in the hull so upgrades are just begging to happen

Yes Zan, our 2.5HP Vertex .21's will fit nicely into this hull...

If in doubt - add more horsepower!

You recall how she drove the Bluestreak into the concrete wall last time we went boating? With this boat... there will be nothing to left to tow

        The weakest link...

Went to Punggol to break-in the Tornado today... but failed

The weakest link in the boat is the clutch One of the clutch sectors broke and flew off!! Planning on replacing the motor coupling with a universal joint... assuming I can find one for the ASP drive shaft thread

On the ASP 15 engine... it's one solid lump Starts easily, runs steadily, brilliant piece of work by the Chinese guys. Because of the dodgy clutch, the engine ran without any water cooling for quite a while... until I drove her past me and realised she wasn't getting any water!! Luckily, no damage done (none that I can see or feel anyway )

If in doubt - add more horsepower!

How much did that boat go for? wonder if the normal car clutch will work there.

Hi Zan... good thing you didn't come down. I was betting on the rain to ease by the time I got to the pond... but it didn't!! It was still quite wet but the guys at the pond still manage to do a few runs late in the afternoon.

Hi Phan, thinking of going nitro? Your Villian EX will come in handy as a rescue boat...

The Tornado came from TSG Imports in Queensland, Australia. They air-freighted the thing over here in 1 week. The total cost was AUD370 of which AUD55 was air freight. Very similar to the price of the Nitro Vee (from memory) from Rotor, both being RTR. There are also several vendors on ebay in the US selling this boat... but as usual, air-freight cost is a killer. GF wanted a "cigarette" style boat, so that's why we got this boat. Apart from the clutch, it's quality is not bad at all.

I'm planning to use a direct drive universal joint for the coupling. The challenge is to locate one for a .15 and have it shipped here

                Hi Doraemon,

Yes a nitro boat has been one of those things - but I probably could if it is quite small (need to hide it at home) and saw the website and that Tornado is about 1m.

                Nice boat.....

If you like small and quick, then the CEN AquaJet could be a goer Offshore Electrics and the CEN website have the boat on video. She is very fast for a .16 motor, and hop up parts are avail from Offshore E

                    Hi Doraemon,

Checked the web and saw that the same maker has a bat like boat that is about 60% of the size of the tornado and running on a .18!

Now that should be one quick boat!! You're only one step away then... check on ebay (in the ebay stores) to see if anyone is offering it out of HK or the US who will ship world-wide. There's a good variety of boats running at Punggol and this would make it even better

Think you can source one universal coupler from rotor. Saw some Traxxas and some other brands. Only problem is to find one with correct fitting. Think the engine end is 5mm right?
For some people it's important to show what they have, for others it's sufficient to know that they have it.

Yes, the .15 has a 5mm shaft. Thanks Mad A, will go and have a look on Sat.

When are you gonna maiden your NV?

Tried to find a 5mm threaded-shaft universal joint for the Tornado, but came up empty. So I bought this 6mm threaded u-joint on ebay and filled in the gap between the threads with expoxy!!! The other end fits the 4mm prop shaft perfectly. Dunno whether the engine heat will cause a failure, but there's only one way to find out

GF will be running the boat at Punggol this afternoon I will be standing far away
