Newbie making a scratch foam plane

    Hi,

I am looking to make a rc plane for a school project. The main aspect of the project is not flying it however it would be nice to build it and then be able to fly. I am thinking of having:
Velocity Power (SD1300-3-30, 11.1V, 30C) battery to power the whole thing
    SKYWALKER 40A Brushless ESC
    SUNNYSKY X2212-1400KV Outrunner Brushless Motor (11V, 12.4A)
    EPP foam
    3 Servos (Rudder, Aileron, Elevator)
    1200cm^2 wing area
    246cm^2 stabaliser area
    60cm Fusalage Length

Firstly do you think this would work (ie fly)? And i am not sure which servo's i would need ie micro or metal and torque required? I know i will need voltage regualtors for this. Also i am not sure what thickness of foam to get 5mm or 10mm?

Any other helpful comments also welcomed.
    Thanks

you just need 9 gm servos

no need voltage regulator, the onboard voltage regulator on the ESC will do

5mm epp a bit floppy but I don't have exp with epp

    I would suggest depron

after that, you can tape over the depron with packing tape to increase strength

so would a servo with: Stall Torque 6.0V: >2.1kgf.cm(29.4oz/in) be enough?

where do you buy depron in singapore?

      thanks

If you are new to RC, it'd be easier if you just surf over to www.rcgroups.com and look at the topic of scratchbuilt foamies.

There are many many plans there that you can just follow and be more assured that the final product will work. If you have any further questions about the build process or the components, you can just ask on the forum itself and get your answers real quick.

            Just my suggestion.

                ok, ok

go to the rcgroups and look through the scratch build foamie forum

there's this design called the blu baby

read it, it should answer MOST of your qns

go art friend too, they should have what you need

                also, my advise

never go without a pack of no:11 sharp blades and an art knife

hi i couldnt find a list of electronics on the page? is this just me being blind or did they not put them? apart from that looks a great plan to base the design on thanks

im assuming your 1200cm^2 wing area will have an approx dimension of 92 cm x 13 cm? that will give you an aspect ratio of 92/13 = 7 which is alright.

for your tail, 24 cm x 10 cm?

how about your vertical tail area?

based on what you said with a length of 60 cm, this is how it may end up looking in terms of ratios: (See attachment)

well, i have flown my senior's project with similar ratios and it works BUT the tail moment arm is rather small, resulting in the need of a bigger elevator and lots of elevator deflection.

if you can, 70 cm fuse will give your better longitudinal stability. my 2 cents

with regards to foam thickness, depron comes in 3 or 6 mm sheets.

see this thread on how i did my scratch build wings with a mix of 3 and 6 mm depron foam:

                              motor selection

based on the motor you said:

                              Model: X2212-1400KV
                              KV (rpm/v): 1400
                              Non-load current: 10V/0.9A
                              Weight: 56g
                              Length: 30mm
                              Diameter: 27.5mm
                              Shaft Diameter(mm): 3

                              see specs:

assuming you'll use an 8 inch prop for this motor, you'll be fine with about 14 amps but you can get a max thrust of 840 grams. should be ok. dont go to 9 inch if you can, cause the amp draw is 20+ amps which is rather high for a small motor. you'll also have a shorter flight time if the amp draw is higher.

plus point of a lower amp draw, you dont have to use a 40 amp esc. 25 amps esc will do (cheaper)

my whole set up was 650 + grams and my 900kv 2215 motor was giving me 800 grams thrust on a 9 inch prop at 15 amps.
