Do you get charge for asking the shop to solder the ESC you bought from them?

    Hi Guys,

Want to find out if the store usually charge you for soldering work even though you bought the ESC from them? Somehow I felt cheated but if it's normal practice, than its ok.

Depends where you get your esc.

I hate to solder, but if u r really into this hobby, it is a required skill.
so i made myself learn it after one year into this hobby.

You mean they solder for you?

They should charge since it is labour and skill cost. My opinion.

Nicholas at Zone5hobby soldered the leads for my ESC's that I bought from him. I bought a plane also, and several other items. No charge for the soldering. A great guy and great service. Thanks Nicholas!

If you are buying the ESC but want to solder different battery connector... sure, I think it's fair to charge. Unless you are also buying the connector from them, then perhaps soldering may be FOC, IMHO.

If your soldering skill is below par, why not pay a little bit for peace of mind? The quality of the job done by the store is usually pretty good. Very reliable solder joint.

such minor and mundane stuff shouldnt be charged..it takes less than 10 min to solder these. For me it's much less time.

seriously, if my LHS charges me for such thing, its the last time i am buying from there..

This is nowhere as complicated as asking them to set a heli for you..This kind of set up service takes time and effort and needs to be charged..

Within 3 weeks, i came down 3 times to their store and spend close to $350 so I thougth the least they can do is to give FOC for the soldering work.

Anyway, if that's is the normal practice, I don't mind. But I won't go to their store again. Don't feel good going there, don't feel I can trust them.

                1) Case 1, requested for motor and recommended me a much more expensive motor for my estarter until one of the customer spoke to him in chinese and he change the motor to give me a cheaper motor and more suited for my estarter (yah,I did that him my plane)

                2) Case 2, wanted to buy 30A ESC, insist that I should get the 40A ESC as the price different is not much. I seroiusly don't care about the price, but I do appreciate if they would explain to me why I should get the 40A, if they got no time to do that (by the way, there is only 1 customer beside me), than just give me what I want. The other sales guy spoke to him in chinese and pass an ESC in a box which is 35A ESC, obviously that one will be more expensive. So I end up getting the 40A.

Anyway, it's their lost . I would like to think that I'm a good customer and willing to spend if the sales person are friendly and willing to share, and no hard sell attitude.

you are right.and i really hate those LHS who just suggest me to get a more expensive stuff even though i dont need it..

best part is they cant explain it to me in a logical way why i should be getting the more expensive one..Expensive doesnt mean better..it depends a lot on your flying style..

whether they charged you SGD1 dollar for it, it still shows they are money minded..

                          A note about soldering

check www.helifreak.com and go to Finless Bob technical videos..

it's in Skills 101 or something like that i think. There is one nice video how to solder ESCs and deans etc.

alternatively, run a search in the Finless video threads and you will find it

                          hope it helps

Yah, I hate that too. Worst still I told him I'm using beginner glider, Cloud Fly, I even have photo of the motor to show him.

He also put me pressure with the connector, asking me if I need the long connector or the short one. Come on, I don't even know there are long and short connector. Anyway, lesson learn and adios to them.

When I visited JetHobby, the experience is so different. The lady was so friendly, she realised that I'm a beginner, so she run through all the things I plan to buy and tell me if it's right or wrong. If she want to recommend me something, she will explain to me what the things can do and the benefits. Even take out the things to let me see... this is what I call service and I'm happy to spend more there as I feel respected as a beginner... you know what I mean.

                              Soldering is fun

Soldering can be a little tricky at the start but you should be able to get the hang of it really quickly.

If you need any soldering help, you can always pop by my place and I will be happy to do it for free. =)
