Real planes in Sky Crawlers jap animation?

Who has caught the Japanese animation movie Sky Crawlers?

The story looks like its set in the past but some of the planes got pretty funky and radical designs. Even got a counter-rotating pusher prop plane.

Wonder if those planes actually existed or are fictional ones?

Oops, actually not sure if movie is set in past of near future.
Turns out, this movie is from the same 'director' as Ghost in the Shell.
