    building a new fiberglass fuselage..

    hi all,

just wanna share how i build my fiberglass fuselage..i guess pics speaks a thousand words..so here goes..

first i carved out the plug in pink foam..i find it easier to work with rather than the normal styrofoam..i've had bad experience with it with all the loose beads flying all over the place and the plug looked really bad in the end..pink foam will now be the material of my choice if i want to make a plug in future..

after sticking the plug onto a separating board,in this case i'm using 3M adhesive spray,i sealed the plug with a layer of laminating epoxy..once dried,i covered in automobile putty..the plug is sanded when putty's dried, from coarse to fine paper..the surface should be smooth and shiny in the end..

the plug should be waxed a few times before laying the glass and epoxy..i'm using 3M car wax with carnauba wax in it..i applied 10 layers of it,juz to be safe..i wouldn't want the glass to get stucked onto the plug and making it difficult to pry the finished mold from the plug..the pic above is with the glass laid..

here is a pic of the mold with glass already laid in it..the mold too has to be waxed before laying the glass..after which a layer of mold release agent is to be brushed into the mold to aid the seperating of the cast from the mold..

to join the halves together,i clamp the halves together with clips..now,the waiting game starts..the epoxy have to be fully cured if i want to pry open the two halves..i wouldn't want to do it when the epoxy has only cure to a solid but still flexible state..that is going to ruin the shape of the cast..i will post a pic of the finished cast once i got it out of the mold..now,i'll wait..tic,toc,tic,toc.....
Working...
