    Creating airfoil template

    Hi,
Like to share with you my experiment and findings on creating airfoil. Many of you may have already knew this.
After making my foam cutter, I am looking to cut some more wings. I found some airfoils coordinates in the public domain and was not able to translate this into airfoil plot.
After some experiment, I found that we could easily plot the airfoil using Excel graph function. Just choose the Scatter XY graph type and adjust the thickness and length as per your requirement.
Make a print out and WahLah....you can make your own airfoil template!

The picture shows a AG-35 template, used commonly in gliders. There are still many other airfoil for other airplane types......new found fun thing to do!

    wah! useful for me, thanks.
Stop looking for a gyro in my plane, they are all in the head.

      Hi msc,

recently a Lao Jiao" of the forum introduce me to this software called Profili. It is very useful if you want to design the structure of your wing. it allows you to do wing with different shapes(tapered, elliptical, etc); including adding spars to your wing. Then it comes out with a template for you to cut foam.

You may want to try it out if you want to construct your wing. Happy buidling!

Ed, this is a very simple method, but I find it effective. Just couldn't believe that this is right under my nose (MS excel in PC) all the while.

Mave, I knew of the Profili one also but did not 'play' with it. With the Excel method, I just have to import the .dat files with X and Y coordinates to draw the template.
I intend to print out the template on paper, transfer it to a heat-proof card board and cut out the template....still looking for cheap and easy way to do this because I do not want to file or use the sandpaper too much!

I know that for smooth travel of the hot wire, the contact surface at the edge of the template have to be baby smooth......any minute notches or dents will trigger the wire and cause ugly foam surface.

Anyway, this is for fun and for me to do more model building. Already got 2 HUGE foam boards from Artfriend. I have to cut the foam into 2 at the shop before I could put them into the boot of my car!

You might have found the function already, if not, look for the graph icon at the menu bar and click on it.
