    Gws plane foam quality.

Hi all i just realised something queer about the difference in foam grain sizes of my old and new e starter. check out the pics below. The old one has a finer grain size and seems slightly stiffer than the new one which has a larger grain size. anyone any comments?

The pics you see are sections of the two different wings.

Are you going to do destructive test to find out the difference? Ha, Ha...

hhaahahaha i hope to do non destructive inspection instead. just wondering if anyone who owns gws planes for years notice the same difference between the old and new batches.

i think just sand it a little and they will all feel the same

oh they are all smooth already. no need to sand. its just the stiffness is slightly different. or is it just that foam gets stiffer as it gets weathered by the sun?

back in those school days, i tremember making foam in the lab. When we make the foam, there is no way to determine the size of the individual foam. I guess in your case, the older GWS has smaller foam because they are compact tightly which result in their higher density(heavier) and stiffness.
Please don't quote me, as all i remember is mixing two chemical together to make the foam. (fun stuff)

might be true...my estarter seemed to get harder and stronger the longer i flew it...

how manufactorer lower cost? lower the density of foam is one method.

some of us witness how a GWS plane crashes, if head-on to the road...bet any GWS plane may break into thousand pieces....

then again, most GWS planes are really light. if you are a seasoned flyer, minimum re-inforcement done...their planes can really perform well in the air....which is why some of us mod their planes... i.e. eStarter

guess through competition recent years, more and more Made-in-China planes and motors emerged.....thus, manufactorers have to lower their cost to increase profit margins....by cutting material costs....

Hi everyone . thanks for the inputs. yea i think the cause of the grain size difference is because of the less compact foam. makes a whole lot of sense to cut costs. i'll see how my new e starter reacts to the elements in the coming months. might be a reason too.
hey leonlio, oh the ultrafly mustang looks demn nice. but where to find one without electronics included in the sale?

                            Hi guys,

THe diff in foam is due to the re-location of the GWS manufacturing plant. It used to Made in Taiwan, but as the labour cost in Taiwan is comparatively higher than China, they had moved there to increase their profit margin a.k.a. cost cutting. Since then, the standard of the kit did drop a bit++. Same method of producing the kit, but the raw material is diff. What to do, have to live with it if we are to fly GWS. Cheap and good to a certain extend... Worse still, there are some unethical Chinese manufacturers (No name mention) even copy GWS design and pass off as their. Really cut and paste. They even copy the mistake GWS made into their kit...No brain required...
Ultrafly in the other hand still made in Taiwan if I am not wrong...Got a F-16 recently and the foam quality is really good compared to GWS foam.

                            Happy Flying...

                            Cheers.
