I just finished my Pilot Kit Pitts S-2A build and electric conversion and now I have some time to post pictures of the building process
Before I start some info in the full size plane:
The first Pitts Special was built in 1942 by Curtiss H. Pitts, and a subsequent production run of ten aircraft was ordered by an operator who became bankrupt before the first was completed. The first of the order was eventually sold to young aviatrix, Betty Skelton, who painted a cartoon skunk on the side and named the machine "The Little Stinker". She and the Pitts soon became well-known at airshows, and she won the US National Aerobatic Association's women's title for three years running, between 1948 and 1950.
Pitts himself built some lesser known aircraft, meanwhile, which achieved some competition success; but a series of tragic accidents led him to turn to crop-duster designs. Using Pitts' rough drawings, an Oklahoma pilot began building one, which was finished and named "Joy's Joy" by Dean Case of Kansas, for his daughter, another promising female aerobatic pilot. Soon a number of home-built Pitts Specials appeared, and Pitts was forced to release proper drawings by a draftsman for the benefit of amateur builders.
Entering the market at a time when military surplus Stearmans and other types were dominant, the Pitts went relatively unnoticed until "Joy's Joy", piloted by Don Pittman, won the 1962 US National Aerobatic Championship at Reno. By 1964, Pitts Aviation Enterprises was doing well enough for the cropdusting portion to be sold, leaving the sports machines as the production focus.
By the early 1970s, Pitts had obtained type certifications for the S-2A and S-1S Specials. Pitts sold his interest in 1977, with design development continuing from 1981 under Frank Christensen, a former aerobatic team manager.
The number of Pitts Specials built by amateurs is unknown, but by early 1990 the total would have exceeded 500, though factory kits ceased to be available.
