    True outrunner mtr for EDF

Hi , just curious to know if anyone has tried using a true outrunner motor(rotating can at the outside) and innovatively found a means to mount into a ducted fan.
I was currious because I just took out and impeller(70mm dia.) the other day and just fix into a 2.5KV mushroom head outrunner and was amaze at the power generated by this small little outrunner. Unfortunately I having figure out how to mount into the EDF shroud and secure the motor.

Theorectically if we could find a way to mount this outrunner(high rpm type) into EDF we could realise a very efficient ducted fan systems.

    Cheers

if i'm not wrong outrunners is more of a high torque den rpm
for ducted fan u need high rpm

      Hi Babylon5,
Well, Nothing is impossible, a GWS 55 EDF can do over 100mph so to install a outrunner motor for EDF why not, right? (Just kidding, dont take it too hard ya ) Anyway, I had came across this thread sometime last year about outrunner for EDF. check it out http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...t=392297&pp=15
I hope this link will answer most of your question.
As wat you had mentioned, the outrunner must be those high KV type.
but then again, it all depends on wat type of airframe and its weight which you are going to fix on with that.
      Cheers .

        outrunner in EDF

Yeah , how nice if you could put a 2.5KV outrunner on 4 cells into a 90mm wemotec Fan? What a blast it will produce?
It won't be long before some guys will do it.

Just need to access to some machine workshop, a lathe and a milling machine...and a pinch of imagination.

Some outrunner are high rpm. Some are DIY or custom made from CD rom motors. You can have any rpm if you know how to DIY the motors.

        meanwhile check out website

        Kyosho 550 - 227 watts / 12 Cells NICAD
        Thrust = 28.4 oz..=806.8 grams if 1kg=2.2lb
or 3.54 gms per watt...real cool man.
They are using Hackers motor...need to save up to get this motor.

I am not sure if Kyosho 550 means 55mm dia EDF

so 460gm of static thrust at 143w(11V at 13 amps) is not unrealistic figure.

Anyway this is a good baseline to start .

          Outrunner EDF

Hi ER69, went to the website. Thanks. Those guys are doing just that. It won't be long before the outrunner become commercially viable
          for EDF application.
That will be good news for all EDF lover. I am just waiting for somebody to cross the 4grams thrust per watt threshold with the 55 and 70 mm EDF setup...then EDF will rule the sky...just kidding.

          Cheers to the outrunner

Thanks X34 for directing me to the site.
Would like to find out of the EDF setup with this motor . maximun current, number of cells tried and static thrust if available.Any idea where to get more info. Anyway I will trawl the internet for more info tonight.

Any idea how much this motor cost and anyone carry this motor?

U can check on the spec table or email them. SHS carries the motor.

Thru outrunner EDF finally in Singapore

                  Hi please check this link

EDF is a 80mm and comes with outrunner motor.

                  Very affordable prices.

Interesting. The gap between rotor blade and housing looks quite big though.

                      Hi Warbird,

                      another observation.

1.)The weight of the fan and motor weighs 104grams. Looks like this is a small outrunner(small magnet) motor. That is why it is taking 33amps and producing only 750grams of thrust.
The EDF would have perform better and more efficient is it is fitted with a larget magnet outrunner motor.

2.) There is no "butterfly" mounting flanges on this fan. Just wonder how to mount this large fan into your model???

All this experimenting costs too much money! I stick to my trusted and well working WeMoTec Fans with Typhoon Motors

Hi, take a look at another outrunner EDF from Hobby Lobby see link.
Has anyone use this EDF? Would like to know how it performs.

                            Hi guys,

Saw a DF specially designed for 28mm out runner in Radar Hobby (Hong Kong). Bought one home and now looking for a suitable outrunner to fit it...

                            Cheers.

                              Yep.

I m using Align RCE BL 3550kV motor on my Interceptor DF unit.

                              Amp draw is around 21.5A.

Thinking of trying Align RCE BL 4050kV motor with a different DF unit on Interceptor also.

should not be a problem to use outrunner. But must get one with high kV and make sure your motor can withstand the amp draw.

                              Cheers
