We have been flying slope soarers at Bedok Reservoir slope since almost a decade ago during the year end North-East monsoon seasons. The other place we fly during these season is Sedili, Johore east coast, a small fishing village which faces South China sea. The current season is coming to an end and the next July South-West winds will be useful for slope soaring at places like Phuket.
A special thing we have at Bedok Reservoir slope is that it has both slope lift and thermal currents to fly our gliders, and the turf proved ideal for scale gliders. Although the slope lift is not as strong as other slopes in other countries, the thermal currents, which is usually found at higher altitude, can quickly bring a big glider up till you see a little speck in the sky. Other smaller gliders can still fly happily around the slope itself.
Places like Sedili has very strong slope lift, which is ideal of EPP combat planes, does not have a good place to land your nice planes. The surroundings are actually a seaside cliff with thick bushes, which is where we land our planes. While lift is strong, it's only contained within the slope area and flying too far away will only make the plane sinks. With such strong winds, thermals are almost non-existance.
Phuket is a bit like Sedili, but the slope is hugh and you can really fly as far as your eyes can see. There are patches of nice fields to land your nice planes but to land safely in such a strong wind and strong lift is very challenging.
As the North-East monsoon wind season is ending, I'm preparing to build tug-planes and gliders for aero-towing for thermal soaring.
