CNC Conversion for X1 mill

I am in the process of converting a X1 model Hobby mill to CNC.

It will be a stepper setup due to cost factor. I just enquired a 3 Axis stepper driver from http://www.xylotex.com

Plan to use Mach2 software from http://www.artofcnc.ca/

    Cheers

    Mike

            HZM,

I'm also in the process of converting a mill into CNC. I would like to know how well the Xylotex stepper driver works as I intend to get one too.

            Thanks

              Hi CNCguy,

So far the stepper driver seems pretty ok during all this well. I had yet to mount it on my mill. Will be getting my set tomorrow

IMO, the software should be the more crucial area to look at. I chose Mach 2 and struggle with it for sometime. Afterall, tested the Mach2 w Xylotex,

              Cheers

              Mike

                    Hi HZM

I'm keen to know how much the whole setup costs ? The milling machine with the CNC retrofit and software ? It's really interesting project you're doing !

                      yo mike,

here is my z-axis conversion.. still left x and y axis. but this sat i broke my motor pinion spacer while working on my y axis block.

                      my current setup cnc.
                      platform : linux (EMC) http://www.linuxcnc.org
                      motor controller : gecko g201
motor power : still hunting for 70V supply
(currently use cheap $20 powerswitching supply 24V ,
able use its to move up and down when doing milling )

So far we do not buy CNC retrofit kit. Its cheaper to make ourself.

                            U will need stepper motor x 3 ~$80 each
                            Coupler x 3 ~$20 each
                            Stepper driver ~$250
                            Power Supply ~$80

And some mounting bracket / hardware

                            Cheers
