How to evaluate a good Power Supply Unit

There is a misconception regarding the input voltage of most RC chargers. Usually most think that a 12V DC power supply is sufficient to power up an RC charger. Manufacturers of RC chargers are very conservative in setting up the input voltage of the charger. Usually, these chargers are intended as a field charger and their main concern is to safeguard your supply battery by setting the minimum input voltage to be higher than 12V. They know that if they fully discharge a Lead Acid or a Sealed Lead Acid battery, the positive plates of the battery will be fully converted into sulfates which in effect make the battery impossible to charge again. The input voltage was set such that it is not sometimes possible to use a Power Supply Unit only capable of delivering 12Vdc. When you do this, the protection circuitry of the charger will assume that the input voltage is not safe anymore and it will keep on beeping (Alarming) telling you to disconnect the charger form the source.

Aside form the voltage, the rated capacity (Ampere rating) of the PSU must be sufficient to handle your set point charging current plus any losses within the charger. This losses are directly proportional to the efficiency of the charger. I have discussed how to compute the efficiency of your charger in the link below.

Should you also need a reliable power supply unit that is compatible to any RC Charger? Refer also to the link below.

For sale: Modified ATX power supply unit. Output 1: Output voltage: 13.8 volts Rated output current: 16 Amperes Usage: This output can be use to supply RC battery chargers of any type. It can also be use to directly charge your sealed lead acid battery. Refer to the Output 2: Output voltage: 5 volts Output current: 2

Been recieving some queries reagring the A/C socket of the PSU. Please refer to the acchached picture.
