The East-West Highway Adventure (1st to the 5th June 2006)

    Hi All,

Anyone here LOVES driving? I have just came back from a recce trip together with my friend who is organising this driving trip. He is doing this trip under the invitation from Malaysian Tourisum Board.

This trip would roughly cover around 2100KM in total, we did 2431.9KM because we were exploring the place.

Below is an email from him pertaining to this trip. Those interested, please get in touch with him directly.

Subject: Mick Jagger, The Beach of Passionate Love and The East-West Highway Adventure (1st to the 5th June 2006)

    Vanakam,

Let us just say I am Mick Jagger. And all of you are my Rolling Stones. We are gathered here tonite at The Beach of Passionate to do the greatest rock concert on Planet Earth.

You see, this is Visit Malaysia Year 2007. And there are some little green men from Mars who have gathered here to visit. They are at the moment flying about (in their flying saucers) skimming the surface of the South China Sea, just off the coast at The Beach of Passionate Love at Kota Bharu, Kelantan. They are looking for a suitable landing spot. Somewhere further out at sea, we can see some pink female species from Venus. They must be friends.

We are lucky. Steven Spielberg has discovered through ET (the movie) that we can actually communicate with them through music. Because we are The Rolling Stones, it is our responsibility to communicate and Make Friend with them -so that they won't get hostile.

We'll kick the concert off with Start Me Up. Nice yah? We'll follow that with I can't get no satisfaction - who ever does? (Just ask Anabelle Chong - if you don't know Anabelle Chong call me = 91814298.)

Maybe we'll end the concert by telling them to Get off my Cloud! The last time I wrote this same message (on the night of 3rd August 2003 at 10.50 pm,) Vikki Chee wasn't so happy that we were trying to antagonise them with songs like Get off my Cloud. We hardly knew the Martians. We don't know their fire power. What if they spew fire at us? We are The Rolling Stones. We are supposed to save the world. Our job tonite is to save Planet Earth. And Vikki Chee said it might be safer and smarter to invite them to Lets spend the night together instead. I think Vikki Chee is right.

So, in the same veins, I would like to invite all of you to spend one night with me at The Beach of Passionate Love on the night of 2nd June 2007.

THe East-West Highway Adventure (1st to the 5th June 2007)

Tourism Malaysia is proud to present The East-West Highway Adventure. This 5 day driving odyssey is timed to coincide with the mid-year school holiday season. I believe this will be a sellout tour. It is an understatement to say it is just another driveaway. To be honest, this is one odyssey that will take you to the far North of Malaysia. We will come so close to Thailand. At Kampong Nibong, we are barely 5 km from the Thai border.

    Our itinerary reads....

Singapore to Awana Kijal 1st June 2007

Awana Kijal to Kota Bharu 2nd June 2007

Kota Bharu to Penang 3rd June 2007

Penang to Singapore 5th June 2007

From Singapore, we will take the coastal route up to Kijal where we will spend one night at the very famous Awana Kijal Resort. We won't just drive blindly. We will make beautiful stopovers like the one we will do at Cherating Cultural Village. I have arranged some light entertainment for us there. I hope you like it. All children under the age of 21 will get a free coconut drink - straight from the coconut tree itself. I have already arranged for a monkey to pluck the coconuts for us. Please don't laugh - I am serious.

We will do lunch with the South China Sea almost lapping at our feet. Paksu Restaurant is just outside the old town of Kuantan at Beserah. It is a beachside restaurant. The breeze from the South China Sea at this time of the year is wonderful. And the deep blue sea and skies of postcard picturesque Terengganu is a real therapeutic treatment for our eyes.

From Mersing onward, we will be coasting almost the entire lenght of the beautiful coastal route to Kota Bharu. Believe me, it is a beautiful drive. I have already done my first recce with Susan. I brought Susan (and her family) along to chart the tulips, maps and route all the way from Singapore - Kijal - Kota Bharu- Penang - Singapore. Tomorrow, I will be making my final last dry run with my entire Marshal Team. We are there to fix all the logistics and admin. By the time you are reading this, I will well be on my way to The Beach of Passionate Love already. I am making a night stop at Awana Kijal. I am coming back on Tuesday night (1st May).

    The East-West Highway
Our objective is to traverse this mountainous ridge. We will drive from Kota Bharu - up to the mountainousTittiwangsa range. Then we will descend to the highway that will take us to Penang for a wonderful 2 night break at Batu Ferringhi Beach. The folks at Kota Bharu have been very accomodating. The Kelantan Tourism Board can hardly wait for us to arrive. I hope they can do a cultural show for us! Siti at Perdana Resort said she will make a request to the Kelantan Tourism Board for a special welcome cultural show for us.

The East-West Highway is one scenic drive that all motorists must do - at least once in their lifetime. The view is simply stunning. And it is not everyday that someone comes along and do a group self drive holiday like this one.

Lunch will be done at the small town of Gerik (Grik). To be honest, on my recce, the proprietor at Restoran Xin Guang Ji confessed that he has not done a major lunch for a group of our size. I'll need your co operation to be a little patient with us here. This is because hardly anyone organises a major driveaway of this size across the East-West Highway. Most trips are done at FIT level (FIT means free and independent traveller.) Our target is to raise 80 to 100 paxs. We are aiming to do this because Perdana Beach Resort at The Beach of Passionate Love can only spare us 35 rooms at the most. Likewise our hotel at Penang.

The East-West Highway Adventure is a true blue FootWorks Adventure Tour. And not all of us will fit in. There is alot pf driving to do. So, you must like to drive. If you like driving, I can promise you that you will get a real true blue therapeutic drive from Mersing all the way to Kota Bharu and across the mountains to Penang. The long sweeping roads is a joy to drive on.

    Courting couple
If you are a courting couple, it is time to fall in love all over again at The Beach of Passsionate Love. If you let me know, I will get you a tatami matt. It will be nice to roll around on the beach........

    Family man
If you are a family man with children in tow......well..... this is the time for you to get all your electronic gizmos to keep the children busy. Much as I want to do your business, I want to be honest with you here. Most children will not be able to appreciate the scenic beauty - unless they belong to some photo clubs or something like that. However, the children will be well rewarded once we get to Penang. There are lots of things to do there.

    Expatriates
If you are an expatriate, then lagi more you must come. The logistics and admin on a trip like this weighs a ton. I don't know when I will do another one like this one. So, if you an expatriate here for only a short term, don't think anymore, just sign up. You will not regret it. Bring your girlfriend or your lover....or secret lover. Don't worry. I won't tell on you. I promise.

The swaying coconut trees of Terenganu itself is a gem at this time of the year. the mountainous view of Malaysia is another.

All the detail you need to know are at the attachment. If you need to ask anything, call me even if I am at Kota Bharu or Gerik. And don't put that phone down just because it is an overseas ringing tone. If you put it down, you will only be leaving me wondering....... So, go ahead and call - 91814298.

I have 35 rooms to fill. I will be doing 2 advertisements in The Straits Times on the 12th and 19th of May. So I am quite sure all rooms will be taken up. But preference will be given to all you fellas who have been with me on this FootWorks Email Mailing List.

I have yet to do a proper photo album. But please have a sneak preview of the pictures by clicking on the url below. I will update the photos after I return on the 1st May 2007.

Tourism Malaysia, my marshals, my family and I would like to invite you to join us on this very exciting driveway which may never be repeated again.

If you are joining us, please fill in the entry form and email/fax it to me. Payment can be sent by mail.

There is no doubt you may have some questions to ask. Please email them to me. Next week I'll send another chaser and run a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Been to the east-west highway b4 liao. Its actually called the Karak Highway. Not much scenic than the NSH except the view of Genting. Over here, TP is very little only as it is pretty much deserted during certain times of the week. So, go ahead n floor that accelerator but keep a look out for other even faster cars coming from behind!!! I did 170-180km/h there. Max speed of my family saloon liao.

Drove up twice already, its a good experience.

Now I need greater adventure!!! Planning to go even further north, Thailand!!!

Here is a blog by a fellow forumer I came to know n travelled wif.

Oh, have you cross between Kota Bahru to Penang? Don't think you can go 180KM there though? And this is the route that is the most interested through out the entire journey.

This route is from Kota Bahru heading towards Gerik.

            Just a gentle reminder.

This East - West driving trip will be between 1st June to 5th June. For those of you who has always wanted to drive a route like this, but does not wish to do it alone. Here is a golden opportunity, as this trip will be done in a Convoy.
