Slapping on some flux paste sure makes soldering easier... but let's not forget that the main purpose of flux is actually to scrub off the thin oxide layer and other contaminants that are on the copper surfaces to be soldered. That's why it makes melted solder flow so easily and stick so well, because the flux actually cleans the surfaces.
But the ability of flux to clean surfaces also means that it is corrosive in the long run, so should be properly cleaned off after the solder joint is completed.
