    Buying camcorder from oversea

It had been quite a while I searching high low for a video cam. Had more or less shortlisted my choice - Panasonic 3CCD model.

I went around checking prices and to my horror, the price we paid locally and those available on the net is like 30% off

Anyone had experience buying such stuff from US?

Take the Panasonic PV-GS300 Camcorder for eg. it is selling for $1450 @ best denki.

    Over at infiniti photo, http://www.infinitiphoto.com/viewite...S300-Camcorder

after adding the international shipping is US$544 ~ S$900 basing on current exchange rate.

However, the diff of the GS180 series which is much older is not too much .... it was selling $999 @ best denki and over at infiniti photo http://www.infinitiphoto.com/viewite...S180-Camcorder after shipping and conversion is S$763 ....still $200 + diff

    Is there a catch somewhere?

Just make sure that the unit that you are looking at support PAL. Those from Us and Korea, as fas as I know is NTSC.
You will not able to see anything on TV, if you got the NTSC unit.

      Good luck!

They have more sale people than customer at most times.

Have you tried Mustafa Centre or Audio House? they price are much more competitive than Best denki.

i'm sure there are places locally that sells what u looking for at or even below the US price. I know that for cameras, can go to cathay photos to get good deal. U might want to have a look here and ask the ppl where to get the best deal for video cams and electronic stuff.

Try Parasilk at holland village. They can give pretty good deals. You can even call them up to ask, can also haggle with the price or at least ask them to take away the gst!

I totally agree with that. But week days lunch time is only slightly better. Just go at strange hours and they will give you fantistic service! Just remember to bargain!

Do not go to the shop that is about 2 to 3 shops after parasilk. They are expensive!

Bought my Sony Video Cam from the US, and it is really much cheaper. I don't think we have problems with NTSC & PAL nowadays. Most if not all our TV sets can view multiple formats. Other than the Warranty, which is the risk you'd take if it's a US only warranty. I don't think you'd find a cheaper price for the same model locally. I tried looking around and finally bought mine from the US. My bro did the same thing and so we all use NTSC format cams....

Armed with the list price of $1450, you can go to these places where our local shutterbugs get their cameras. I'm sure you'll be able to get a good price/quote.

                          1) Allan Photo - SLS ground floor.
                          2) Cathay Photo - Peninsula Plaza.
                          3) Camera shop opp AMK MRT next to the ex-cinema.
For some people it's important to show what they have, for others it's sufficient to know that they have it.
