Looked like there is no such a thing here in Singapore...

Must go for alternative from overseas or use spend time splitting/sanding 6mm depron ( seow leow!).

Made the bigger 3DX earlier this week, quite fun flying it, flew 4 packs without incident, so, tempted to make the mini-3DX next, but this requires the 3mm depron while the former uses the more common 6mm found in Art friend.

The free plans for both can be found at www.foamyfactory.com.

Anyone can find the 3mm depron here, pls let me know. Many thanks!

Artfriend sells 5mm not 6. The new artfriend at taka has 3mm, but they dont sell them in big sheets, A3 size is think.

Yup! that 's right, the 3mm foam sheet only can found in Taka I went down to BBC few days ago don 't even seen 3mm foam there so I ask the sales girl and she told Taka got store. Maybe you can try and get them over at Taka. BTW, seen to be very interesting lay the mini-3DX looks kind of cool

Can make it for $20-$25 of raw materials (no electronics), but if you go and buy those ready made ones, like Shock Flyer or Yak, can cost $50 - $100. Take only about 5 hours (or 2 evenings) to make the bigger 3DX.

            Deron, 1 or 2 sheet ~ $10
Spar ~ $6-$10 (I used $2 very light weight wood strip from Daiso, can also)
Horns and push rods ~ $5
            LG (optional)

If I go Taka, will buy extra, value add by pre-cutting (might as well). Say, pre-cut depron, carbon spar, horns and push rod for $30? If anyone can do this cheaper, let me know, I buy not-so-ARF kit from you.

            Cheers!

Need to clarify if the depron u guys are talking about is a.k.a. compressed foam? This foam is the rather "crispy" type right? - strong, buy beyond a certain point it just snaps into 2... Not exactly the type avail. overseas which, from the way they describe, sounds rather flexible.

              Thanks!

I think compressed foam is depron, or close enough. The flexible one used for sloping or 3d is EPP.

The new sheets at Artfriend looks like 6mm to me, instead of the usual 5mm ones.

Depron is a trade name of a certain type of compressed foam, like Velcron is to hooks and loops, and Teflon is to PTFE. Depron should be almost the same in characteristic as the 6mm compressed foam from Artfriend, while the original may have slightly altered polymers for light weight or strength or flexibility. Yes, it is strong, light and crispy, snap like a biscuit. It can only survive VERY light crashes. That's why it is much cheaper to built depron crafts then buy. If you crash your $90 depron plane, , but when you crash you $5 depron plane, , its just an experience.

Anyway, any material will break if crashed to a certain severity, so depron is no wonder material, try ramping your titanium bumpered big foot to a lamp post at 50km/h.

EPP is less compressed, but has more flexibility. The "grains" are very coarse. But it still tear or break up when crashed.

The secret is to learn to land properly (shhh, don't tell everyone) or change hobby, like keeping lou-han fish .

                      depabo

Unlike expanded bead polystyrene foam (aka pau pau ban/ stylofoam/ styrofoam) there are many many other methods of manufacturing/ treating foam boards like expansion, extrusion, injection and many other materials like Polystyrene or polypropylene......

most foam boards/art boards/heat insulation boards (they are the same) comes in a double sided paper protective backing (sandwiched, paper, foam, paper) This is to ensure during transportation, there will be minimum damage.

now, depron is not as complicated as wat most of as think... the word actually means DE-Papered-foam tats all... No depron on earth is make of epp... mostly eps or epe. the artboard from artfriend with no paper backing is very very similar to depron with the only exceptiion of been slightly heavier... rest asure and use our singapore version of depron = depabo (DE-Papered-ArtBOard) with confident!!

For building is 1/2 the fun of this hobby

Went to Taka Artfrient, they have the 3mm foam board alright, but VERY small piece, something like 30mmx45mm. Make masak planes only!!!
Asked the guy there, and he said they only carry this size for 3mm. So no choice, get a few 3mm, and 6mm (and also have 5mm, but not only 60mmx90mm, the 6mm are twice as big, suitable for one piece wing).

Anyone managed to get larger 3mm foam board?

Will have to strategically join the 3mm together to form the larger pieces, e.g. 2 piece wing instead of the intended 1 piece design and reinforce the joint with 6mm strips. The mini-3DX is supposed to be VERY VERY light, cannot use 6mm at all.

May the force be with me.

Lifted below from net for info :

EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) foam is a fairly recent innovation that has revolutionized the way to build planes. EPP foam doesn't dent or break. It has a "spongy" quality to it, so on impact it compresses and pops back to shape. That is why this type of foam is used in most automotive bumpers. This makes it great for a "trainer" or "combat" type aircraft because it can take a great amount of damage unlike balsa or other types of foam.

Depron is more rigid and was originally used for insulation for homes. It is not as durable as EPP, but is super easy to build and repair with foam safe CA. Because it is so rigid, it provides very crisp and precision flight characteristics.

Just wondering - is it real that we don't have a retailer in SGP that carries EPP ??

FYI : McDonalds Burger foam boxes are EPP !! Go have a Big Breakfast and use the EPP Foam Tray & Cover to make micros.

I think BigMc box was compressed foam (before they go green and use paper boxes or wax paper), just like your regular chicken rice foam box. They are strong and crisp, breaks when you poke it.

If you want FREE EPP, go to your large appliance retailer, as things like washing machine, fridge, cooker/hoods and eletric ovens etc sometimes are packed with EPP instead of the regular high density polystyrene foam for transportation. You may be lucky if you can find a sheeted one (usually covering the door or glass) !!! I do sometimes see them fold and throw away behind the shops. Usually the corner protectors are EPP, made from 3 triangular pieces to form a corner.

I THINK you can also get EPP from camping mat, you can buy it for $10-$15 from cheap camping supplies, which is rolled up, usually pink or blue in color, about 1/3 inch thick.
