In Single direction rotor blades heli, you need tail rotor to counteract it. Normal heli's tail rotor is actually a variable pitch propeller that create a lift horizontally to counteract the main rotor.

In real heli, that spinning tail blades is dangerous to the ground crew or anyone near it especially in urban area. So, Bell (Is it Bell?) come out an idea by using high speed and high pressure air nozzle to counteract the main rotor instead.

Think of like a strong air jets instead.

hmm very intresting. Do they really have it for RC one ? or it need a turbine to work ? or what does it need to work ?

I know "Vario" has NOTAR Scale R/C Heli. I not sure whether it is running turbine or not but I think it is just a normal nitro type.

I didn't check out Vario on the detail but I believe it is like a real NOTAR heli design.

As for how does it fly... well I also believe it should be transparent to user point of view.

EDIT: BTW....NOTAR stands for "NO TAil Rotor"

                Vario Notar helicopter kits.

                hiya folks!
the Vario kits are based loosely on the notar designs from MD.
the life size units utilise the downwash from the main rotor to provide a side thrust that counters the torque of the main rotor. this is know as the Coanda Effect .
more about the notar concept HERE
the vario kits simply pushes air out the tail thru a adjustable nozzle to counter torque, so its "almost" scale.
i think its cos the cost of direct scaling down(concept of operation) will make it prohibitively complicated. also air, like all liquids and gasses do not act the same when you scale it down.
air will work a full scale airfoil differently from a scaled down airfoil of the same type, for example.
thats prolly why the Vario kits are wayyy simplistic, but it works really well, as shown this Wunderbar video
no aerobatics though, the heli is incapable of doing extreme maneuvers.
wish i have one.... santa? santa? yoohoo santa!
