    Tornado II "Type R"

Now that GF's Tornado is set-up, trimmed and running reliably, it's time to build my own

This is how she looks out of the box - the ASP .15 is factory installed, as is the drive shaft and outdrive mount. The ASP engine is quite a nice runner for its size... can push a 1 metre+ boat to a decent speed For this project, she's gonna be dumped in favour of a hotter motor

If in doubt - add more horsepower!

Here she is undergoing an engine transplant

Out comes the ASP... in goes the Team Infinity .18... supposed to produce 1.35ps at some silly RPMs

Got a pleasant surprise when stealing the flywheel off the ASP... the little bugger is ballraced!! No wonder she's so sweet

For those who are wondering... the TI .18 came from RC Worldwide in HK... the header and pipe came from the good people at ROTOR

If in doubt - add more horsepower!

Here's a comparision between the original Tornado and v2.

I've hit a brickwall at this stage because the ASP flywheel does not seat on the TI shaft properly. Have to find someone with a lathe to mod the thing a bit

Lesson learned - unless you own a lathe, buy marine engines that come with flywheels

If in doubt - add more horsepower!

Time to pull the Tornado II out of storage and make some progress

Decided to run a one-piece drive shaft with separate rudder (need to thank Zanter for this idea... using a 4mm diam hardened steel flybar from the Raptor heli ). The Team Magic pipe adds a bit of BLING . There's a bit more work ahead with all that "third party" hardware to be installed

Will take me at least another 2 weeks to get her ready for engine break-in at PP (I'm a slow builder)

If in doubt - add more horsepower!

Man, I wait till neck long long for this R type to get moving :P. Well I of all people shouldnt comment on slow builds

I think the correct prop will be critical for this screamer. A leason learnt from the Hammer. I will ask Mediacorp to cover the maiden

            t2tr?

            hi herman,
seems like yr t2tr construction process is being holdup due to the building of the topspeed 2 although i hope tat u wil do the latter first cos i quite eager to witness the tornado tat is powered wif a ti.18.but nevertheless i also quite interested on the yr in-building tunnel hull, but at the meantime i am pleased wif my original tornado in which i believe pp still got a lot of lives underneath the water like water plants, fishes, insects n of course turtles living harmony together. In my own opinion,i guess they dun really welcome boats to spoil their peacefulness.anyway i hav some problems wif my coupling joint cos i able to source out one almost the same but wif a 5mm diameter opening to it.i even went to ntc to look for a copper collar tat could act as a spacer in between the coupling n the 4mm driveshaft but to no avail.looks like i need a cnc-machine man to lathe a coupling identical to mine original coupling wif a 4mm openings.

You can order 4mm to 5mm couplings at http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/MainPage.htm . No need CNC machine

                  Offshore Electrics

Zanter orders so much stuff from Offshore Electrics that I think he knows their entire catalogue from memory

BTW, Steve Vaccaro of OE is very good to deal with... if you are thinking of ordering an Aeromarine Mean Machine, he will happily give you a shipping quote

well i still prefer to do things at a time until i get my coupling issue solved, only then i might consider of gettin the (mean machine )but on second thoughts i still hav my wife/daughter to feed so tat makes it another obstacles to cross in which i believe life path must tackle step by steps.well can't really rush things as it would turns out be a nasty one though.

                      coupling

actually ezzy has a friend of his who can do some milling works on the coupling so i guess it be quite alright once it is done.will also try ordering from offshore-electric (bro zanther)if he dun mind cos i hav not ordered things via internet to make a comparison.

                        Hi Doraemon,

I am planning to set up my hydro using the one-piece drive shaft idea you illustrated. Seems like a great idea. Where can I find the 4mm diam hardened steel flybar - any parts number and local source? And how much does it cost? I guess I will need the couplers too, have you found any yet? Thanks in advance.

                        Cheers, Wally

u can get the 4mm rod from rotor.it considered one of the raptor flybar parts

                            4mm drive shaft

                            Hi Wally

Yes, the hardened steel driveshaft is from Rotor... being a flybar for a Raptor heli. The cost is around $9 to $10. You may need to check the diameter of the bar at the counter before you buy because Rotor stocks several similar looking bars with different diameters and lengths. The bars are threaded at both ends with the M4 thread... which is very useful because it will enable you to use a wide selection of Graupner M4 threaded carbon props from Offshore Electrics.

As for couplings - if you are looking for a coupling for a nitro motor, I would suggest RC Worldwide in HK as a supplier. They have a full range of Octura engine couplers. If you are looking for a coupling for an electric motor, then Offshore Electrics is the supplier.

While you are at Rotor, you may want to check out their Traxxas spare parts. They still have some stinger/titan motors, props, cooling coils and universal joints in stock.
If in doubt - add more horsepower!

Just to add further to what Dor has just said. You can consider getting the rudder setup @ offshore with an inbuilt water pickup costing about $10+ to complete ur mod but U need to extend the rudder further to clear the prop or you can mod your existing setup and use a heli paddle as a rudder.

The more expensive option is ordering a rudder setup from octura etc from offshore. Hope to see your mod boat at PP soon!
