OHP class - FFG 51 USS Gary

Inspired by Stuka's Ponggol Navy , I had approached the master to learn how to scratch build a ship. I was in awe of his 'hanger/shipyard' of which his planes, sailboats and man-of-war were kept. A newbie to this RC hobby, his collection amazes me.. . I got to view the akula with its 'nuclear reactor' just completed and his workmanship is

Had decided to scratch build the Oliver Hazard Perry (OHP) class frigate of the US Navy. So while waiting for the plans the arrive .. will give a little info on the FFG.

First commissioned in late 70s, it is to provide Protection of Shipping (POS*) as Anti-Submarine Warfare(ASW) combatants in escort of auxillary/merchant convoys. 2 versions exists, 'short-hull' (original) and 'long-hull', of which the 'long-hull' are longer by 8 feet, which carries the SH60B LAMPS III helicoptor that is (Our navy is buying the newer version of this heli .. S-70B for our new frigates ). The seahawk (SH60B) improves the ASW and ASuW(Anti-Surface Warfare) of the FFG.

Its armament includes a missile launcher to fire both the Standard missile (AA) and Harpoon missile (ASM), an OTO Melara 76mm gun, Phalanx Close-In-Weapon-System (CIWS) against ASMs and Mark 46 torpedoes.

Have decided to build the repilca of USS Gary (FFG 51) as I had sailed on it before, thus more meaningful that way.

Just got the All-in-one printer from the PC show .. so can scan in some of the photos i dug up.

This one shows the Harpoon missile on the missile launcher, they are doing a visual inspection of all the missiles inside.

This is the Standard Missile (SM-2)on the launcher. Anti-Air Missile (AAM) with a range of over 40 nm. The other photo of it firing is from the net.

Wah...cant wait to see things happening in your shipyard...

Add some motion to the stills here...here's some video clips of OHP class frigate and firing of Phalanx CIWS and Sparrow missile in the Aussie navy.

While waiting for next tues to go buy balsa, heres a pic of the 76mm oto melera firing to the starboard. It was firing into the Pacific ocean while on the way from thailand to Okinawa, Japan. There was firing of the Phalanx CIWS but at the rear, so couldnt take a photo and it sounded like a fart .'puttttttt' .

you wanna fly the S70? Have to join RSAF then. .. but can tell u, flying heli to land on ships is tough .. i stay inside the heli control ..can see the guide officer quite stress also. But will be fun ... will have plenty of systems to play with, MAD, dipping sonar, torpedoes, sonabouys, Penguin missiles?? heh heh ..

I was on MC that day, if not that reflection on the glass will be me... ...dreaming only! ...but guided super puma in a few exercises, really stressful...

Have you printed and cut out all the bulkheads to be used for estimating the amount and types of balsa to buy?

Had scanned everything in ... will be printing out the bulkhead tomolo... it is going to be 1.4 metres long so will need plenty of balsa and there will be splicing to do

as for what type of balsa, i dunno. No recommendations from the plans so have to go there and see.

have plenty of superstructure to make hopefully can complete in abt a month.

1.4m... ...you already know thought how to transport it to punggol? It's going to need lots of weight to get it to waterline, it will be very heavy man...

hmmm... ...i suggest you do a calculation of the volume of hull under the waterline and estimate the buoyancy need to counter, cos at 1.4m you will have much bigger surface area than the WTC of my akula. The akula hull is negligible cos it's full of flood ports...

Forgot to ask, have you thought over the building processes, eg. how to plank a 1.4m hull when the building board is 1.2m (can buy bigger board ), how to align all the bulkheads at waterline level, need a center spar or building from a flat deck? Are the number of bulkheads given enough to line all the way up to 1.4m, will distance between bulkhead be too big? Will the bow be plank or carve from wood/foam? Have to think over as they affect the amount and type of wood needed too. In some case, may have to make a jig before building can start.
