With the Twinmustang project completed and seems no hope to get a suitable plan for P61 Black Widow, I decided to move over to another boat project.
Well, not building a boat actually, influenced by Loyn and a few guys here looking for warships, I did a search on the web and was happy to find the plan of a Cannon Class Destroyer Escort. Frankly, I still prefer warships of the WW2 era, due to requirement for stealth operations, modern warships leave nothing much to see on the maindeck..
A little bit of history. The need for a Destroyer Escort class of ship came during WW2 to be used against the German U-Boat threat in the Atlantic. When needed, the Destroyer Escort could accomplish the mission of the larger Destroyer by attacking surface ships with guns and torpedoes and serving as scout ships of the fleet. The Destroyer Escorts proved this attack capability at the Battle of Samar. A specially designed Destroyer was then built to protect transports in convoys, these lighter Destroyers were designated DEs, developed for anti-submarine patrols. The first DEs main battery were 3-3 inch/50 plus 2- 40 mm and 9-20 mm and depth charges, no torpedo tubes. Next the DEs, had two 5 inch mounts and a set of three torpedo tubes. There was little difference in their size and tonnage. Generally the ships carried 12-15 Officers and 175-200 Crewmen. The DEs top speed was 20 to 24 knots, generally cruised at 17 knots.
Today only one of these ships remains afloat in the United States, the USS Slater. Moored on the Hudson River in Albany, New York.
Some specs I used for modeling reference:
Length: 306 ft
Beam: 36 ft 7 in
Draught: 10 ft 5 in
Guns: 3x 3"/50 cal, 1 twin 40mm bofors, 10x single 20mm oerlikon
Torpedoes: 3x 21 in
Depth Charges: 2x stern racks, 8 side mounted K-guns (4 each side), Hedgehog (forward array impact fuzzes)
