After getting some inspiration from watching a documentary abt hovercraft, Artyspec and I are going to start building a hovercraft on fri right after our O lvl paper! Reason why i'm starting this build thread so early is to get some ideas, we got our basic requirements already, have to be able to transport a TT01 over water. We're thinking of something like an LCAC. With 4 1A computer fans to blow up the skirts and 2x 400 motors powering props to drive it.

Here are some links which i came across and found useful.
This is byfar the most comprehensive guide
Oh, and a teaser.
Main problem will be the skirting, we plan to use ripstop and follow this particular design
For those who would like to build a sure-work hovercraft, here are step-by-step instructions to make one.
Yea, we would like to follow our instincts to make one!
Am sure looking forward to the end of O levels!!! 44 hours and 12 minutes more!!!

from the links and ideas from them, I have come up with the initial design sketch, I think we can build this, the only nitty gritty bit is to figure out how to sew the skirt, you see, we're boys and, umm, can't sew for nuts.

Here is my input.
No guarantees but it shuold work..
Take those canvas material or those clear buoys and cut them up into shapes as in A, B, C1.
A is a long strip that you make the side of the skirts from
B and C1 are the under and top sides.
C2 will be the top deck made of stiff ply or anything you happy with.
For C1 and C2, Cut holes for the Input fan or fans. (pic shows 1 only)
and holes in the underside (B)
Material chosen should be able to withstand not treading apart.
Use those thick electrical repair tapes, those super uber gummy one to semi tape them together until you get the rough shape then you basically plaster the thing with masking tape la toll you get a nice shap eyou are happy with.
Top deck are also gummed to the upper portion of skirt.
The power of the fans must be able to push air in and maintain a constant pressure and force so you must get the super deluxe power ranger fan. LOL
The bottom holes must be evebly spaced and not to big to allow a slight ballooning..
Sorry i can only draw elipse with "paint" i do not have cad or photoshop.LOL
Hope it helps

That would be great.Originally posted by Artyspeccurrently thinking of using ripstop to construct the skirt.
if you can actually stitch the skirt it will definitely hold well but a few strong staples in lieu of the stitching and plenty of electrical tape will hold the air in though.
If you can get hold of a small hand vacuum instead, it will definitlely give more air boost to your project.
I recall a tiger brand, mini hand held vacuum, its a super sucker damn strong so the fan sure strong.
Try the cash converters for these hand vacuums out.
not sure if your pc fans can pump out enough to go over water safely with weight on it.
Just got to mod a fan to fit the hovercraft project
Batt can use the small 12V ones.
IMO only ah...f

I have a hand-held Black n Decker wet/dry vacuum. The batts died liao n I rip it apart to view. Its using a slightly bigger than 540 size brushed motor. It doesnt run on 12V leh, more like 9.6V.Originally posted by dirtdynamicsIf you can get hold of a small hand vacuum instead, it will definitlely give more air boost to your project.

unless you wanna mount a few semi strong ones then also can...

Using ripstop to construct skirt and sewing it together and applying CA to seal of any possible leaks.. Sewing kinda sucks but its still probably one of the most effective ways to make it. Skirt will be made in 4 parts, 1 comp fan powering one section, so at least it floats if say, 1 fan fails.8UHP

I am inclined to think that one powerful fan will work better than 4 lousier fans cuz 4 lousier fans will have 4 huge holes for air to escape where ias one fan wd only have 1 hole, but then again, P=F/A, one fan would have 4 times the pressure pushing on it. Also, if one fan were to be used, i think there will be alot of wasted thrust cuz a lot of air will hit the bottom(whether ground or water) and create an air current which will reduce the efficiency of the fan. Honestly, if it can move along at a respectable pace without any load, i would already be over the moon.

Wow............. Let me get involve as well. I am waiting for delivery for my 18V Speed600 size brush motor for some projects myself.
But wat the hack, if you guys need the motor, just drop me a PM. I will SPONSOR this motor for your project. It comes build with internal cooling fan inside the motor.
Good luck.
Cheers
