Welcome. I suggest the Victoria sailboat from MRP. Can be bought from Rotorhobby. I think it costs thereabouts $180 give or take a few dollars. You will also need a 2 channel RC with 1 standard servo for rudder control and 1 sail servo to open and close the sails.
Sailing is easy with no fear of the boat capcising so it is stress free.
The victoria has a racing class of its own and is very popular. Lots of mods can be done to her to make her go faster. Check out the search engines for Victoria modifications.
A bigger option is the Voyager at 1m in length. More fun to sail but also more costly about $250
Good luck and hope to see you at ponggol soon. BTW there will be a race at Sentosa Cove on the 22 jan. come and have a look if you can. We will be at Ponggol Park Monday 2pm
    Cheers!

        Hi,
        mike
        with regards to keel length.

Its does affect the relation between the keel hydrodynamics and size of the sail allowing wind force acting on the sail to move your boat.
in real situation there will be a risk of capsule if the relation is not well taken care of..

        hope it helps a little

Keel length is dependant on type of boat and the general use of it. Racing boats tend to have longer keels to overcome the dynamis force of the sails. Pleasure boats are for pleasure and comfort and therefore do not have large sails and hence a shorter keel. RC boats just mimic this. Generally water may get into the boat in rough weather/strong wind conditions but if your boat is watertight and the r/c compatment is sealed, there is little fear of capsizing. Most of us use "tupperware" for the r/c compartment because it has a good seal but can be easily opened, usually with a screw on top.
          Cheers!

Oops forgot to answer your last question... yes the balast on the keel is heavy. If you lean your boat totally to either side, the ballast will upright your boat when you release it. Just like those punching bags shaped like a bowling pin.

I believe that tamya has some models but are rather pricy. The showroom is in paya lebar near the traffic police HQ. You can see them at the tamya website.

                    Rigging Sail on Victoria.

                    Hi Blackite207,
Met you sometime back at Ponggol to observe the RC Sailiing.
Can you direct me or from any web site that explain basic rigging of sail on Victoria.
Thanks and Happy 2006 Sailing Year.

                      Dear Alamin2,
Powered boats usually cost more because of the power system (motor speed control, battery) . Sailboats are dependant on the wind so start up costs are usually much cheaper. I estimate $190 for the boat, $50 for the sail winch/sail arm, $30 for a standard servo for rudder. 2 channel Tx and Rx maybe $90 (I think) and the usually Rx battery.
The International 1 Meter (IOM) boats usually cost $3000+ because each one is hand built for racing and are very sensitive to setup and tuning. Made out of fiberglass and/or carbon fiber. 4kg weight but will move in the slightest breeze...even if you cant feel it!
                      Hope this helps
                      Cheers!

                        Dear Vifo, follow this link:

Good resource center that will teach you to beef up the "plain jane" victoria into a "hot dog" sailboat.
                        Cheers!
