    Recommended Setup Of Align(HW) ESC for Trex 700X/760X/700E

    ESCs: Align(Hobbywing) 130A Platinum V4, Align(Hobbywing) 160A Platinum V4
    Motors: 800MX (520KV, 10 poles), 850MX (490KV, 10 poles), Pyro 750 (500KV, 14 poles)


    Important Note:
    I found the 130A ESC is not able to handle the Pyro 750-50 motor. It will burn the ESC.


    Recommended ESC Parameters:

    1. ESC 130A & 160A Platinum V4 (with 800MX & 850MX motors)

    Flight Mode: Store Governor
    Lipo Cells: Auto
    Voltage Cutoff Mode: Soft
    Cutoff Voltage: 3V (Never set to disable)
    BEC Voltage: 7.6V (when using HV servos) 5.8V (when using normal servos)
    Start up Time: 15s
    Governor Parameter P: 4
    Governor Parameter I: 5
    Auto Restart Timing: 25
    Timing: 15 degree
    PWM Frequency: 30KHz (Not Available for 130A ESC)
    Motor Rotation: CW
    Restart Acceleration Time: 2s
    Active Freewheel: Activated
    Start-up Power: 2



    2. ESC 160A/200A Platinum V4 (with Pyro 750-50L2 normal and Competition motors)

    Flight Mode: Store Governor

    Setup & Initialization Procedures

    1. Use the programming box to set the ESC parameters according to the above recommended settings. No need to connect motor when programming the ESC parameters (no problem if it is connected). Connect the programming box to the ESC, power up the ESC with a 6S to 12S battery. Press the OK or ITEM button to connect the programming box to the ESC. Press the ITEM button to browse all the programmable items, and then press the OK button to enter any programmable item you want to set. Press the Value button to browse all available parameter values. Press the OK button to save the new selected value.

    2. The next step is to do ESC throttle calibration. Process varies according to the flight controller and Tx you use, but the basic calibration concept is similar. Essentially power up the Tx first, push the throttle stick all the way up, then power up the ESC (with motor connected) and flight controller as well. You should hear two beep tone from the motor, then bring the Tx throttle stick all the way down. That's it.

    3. I recommend the use of Store Governor mode. The ESC will do a RPM calibration at the first time you connect the ESC power after you select the Store Governor mode in the ESC. If you ever need to make the ESC to do RPM calibrate again, you need to program the ESC to the Elf Governor Mode, save the value, and re-select the Store Governor Mode then save it again; this will force the ESC to do RPM calibration when you next power up the ESC.

    ESC RPM calibration need to be done with the main and tail blades mounted, main blades at zero pitch, and throttle value at 50%. Set your Tx's throttle and pitch curves to linear (i.e. 0-0 50-50 100-100) at Normal flight mode; in the case of VBar set the ESC output value to 50% at Normal flight mode. Power up the Tx, follow by powering up the heli. Make sure the Tx is at throttle hold (or "power off" in the case of Vcontrol), and that the flight mode is at Normal, move the throttle stick to the mid stick, verify that the main blades are at zero pitch (very important). Deactivate the throttle hold switch (or power on switch in the case of Vcontrol), the motor should start to spool up. Allow the motor to fully spool up, wait for another 5 seconds or so and activate the throttle hold to stop the motor from spinning.

    You can leave the battery connected to the heli. Connect the programming box to the ESC, press OK button. Press the R/P button a few times until the programming box display the "Max RPM" (Standardized RPM) value. Power off the heli. The Standardized RPM should be somewhere around 110,000 to 168,000. This value is the max electric revolution at 100% throttle. For example if the max electric RPM is 120,000, motor is 10 poles, gear ratio is 9.33, the actual headspeed will be 12000 ÷ 5 (half of pole no) ÷ 9.33 (gear ratio) = 2570. That is the actual headspeed will be 2570 at 100% throttle. If you want set the heli headspeed to be 2050, the throttle percentage will be 2050 ÷ 2570 = 80%.

    Set the Tx throttle values at different flight mode according to the headspeed at each flight mode you required. The above RPM calibration/calculation to determine the headspeed is quite accurate, you do not really need to verify the actual headspeed with a tachometer.


    Standardized RPM (SR) Values for Various ESCs/Motors.

    The following values are for reference only, however if the value you get is very difference from the list here, you need to watch out, something may be wrong.
    The SR value various with main blades, battery and gear ratio.

    ESC 130A with 800MX 520KV (700 DFC, Gear Ratio 8.46)
    SR = 121,000

    ESC 130A with 850MX 490KV (700X, Gear Ratio 8.46)
    SR = 114,000

    ESC 160A with 800MX 520KV (700 DFC, Gear Ratio 9.33)
    SR = 121,000

    ESC 160A with 850MX 490KV (760X with 760mm Blades, Gear Ratio 9.33)
    SR = 106,000

    ESC 160A/200A with Pyro 750-50L2 500KV (700X with Gear Ratio 9.33)
    SR = 166,000

    ESC 160A/200A with Pyro 750-50L2 Competition 500KV (700X with Gear Ratio 9.33)
    SR = 163,000

    It looks ok. But, it depends on the motor pole and gear ratio.
    The Align 850MX is a 10 poles motor.

    If the SR is 114,000
    the head speed at 100% throttle is 114,000/10/2/Gear Ratio, i.e. = 22,800 / Gear Ratio

    If your heli is a 700X, for example, the gear ratio is 8.4615,
    the head speed at 100% throttle is 2695.

    To get a head speed (as an example) of 2100, you need to set your throttle to 78% (2100/2695 x 100).
    The throttle setting should be within 70% to 85%.
    If it is not, you need to change the motor with a different KV, or change the gear ratio (usually pinion).

    Yes, SR of 114,000 is normal. I have the same SR value on my Trex 700X with the HW 160A ESC.

    To get the max SR value when you do the store governor mode first spool up,
    you need to make sure all the battery cells are fully charged to 4.2V, and
    the collective pitch is absolutely zero before you spool up.
    During flight controller setup, ensure that the swashplate is level at zero pitch position.

    Pyro Motor

    If you are using Pyro 750-50L2 motor with Hobbywing 160A ESC (or 200A) on the T-Rex 700X it is better to use 9.33 gear ratio (i.e. main gear 112T and pinion 12T).
    I find the original gear ratio of 8.46 can cause OC shutdown on the HW ESC somehow.

    BTW, don't use the HW 130A ESC on the Pyro motor.

    If you ever find the computed headspeed (derive from the SR value of the HW ESC) is not close to the actual headspeed, don't fly.
    It may indicate that the ESC has problem with the setup somehow. Try change to higher gear ratio.
