The Schwing 88 is the first exciting new model by James Hammond produced by Sloperacer. Followers of James?s work will recognise trademark features in what is simply a beautiful looking glider.

James Hammond is one of the most successful glider designers in the world today and there probably isn?t a slope or hill where we slope flyers go that hasn?t been flown by one of his designs! And for good reason, his planes just fly so well. So when designing the Schwing it was a tall order to come up with something better with the bar set so high. As a result the Schwing went through a lengthy design programme resulting in just about everything redesigned including a completely new wing section. This was even wind tunnel tested. The sections are the latest development from James?s highly successful original aerofoil designs and to quote James: ?It took a while to get there and a huge amount of testing, because I wanted a series of sections that would make slow speed handling even slower, and high speed capability even faster.? The Schwing is a high performance sports plane designed to fly very much closer to the levels now attained by the latest competition gliders, including out right speed!

So whether your looking for a plane to fly anything from the merest whiff to howling gale or you?re a budding racer or even want to try a bit of light/acro DS?ing, this is the sort of plane your likely to keep in the back of the car at all times. It?s one you?ll have the most fun with because it tracks so well, dare we say, making your flying look so good! Just take a look at the video and try not to smile! After all, its predecessor was arguably the best in its class, and the Schwing is definitely an improvement in almost every department? Now here are some of its features:

    Wings
Designed to reflex as well as to droop, the airfoils used on the wing were specifically conceived with all round sport flying in mind and hence are unusually aerobatic too! The descending thickness, optimally cambered sections will let you go from really slow landing speeds with the flaps down to blistering passes with a little reflex, yet the plane will thermal away in light air in conditions you would not normally try, well, most of us anyway! The optimization for the rear area of the wing allow a smoother transition when in camber or reflex, try aerobatics with elevator and the whole trailing edge of the wing linked with a little reflex as well as camber and you will be amazed. Those that want to get every last bit of performance will find that permanently coupling with the elevator is actually a very efficient way to fly this plane; some call it a ?live wing?. It was by design!
Large ailerons, large flaps and a semi elliptical wing plan form each add to the overall performance of the plane. Spars are impressively huge for this wing which is always a telling indication of what this wing is designed to do! To go with it, there is also the impressive joiner! Massive is the only way to describe this part. It?s 35 x 12mm in section. It?s as big if not bigger than most 3m competition planes

Horns are factory fitted with well thought out geometry to allow servo flush servo installation using 10mm or thinner servos, though maximum servo thickness is 13mm in flap bay and 12mm in aileron, making a huge range of servos possible. Using conventional linkages you can get a clean, practical and most importantly, serviceable wing installation optimized to use full servo travel to give high torque and low slop. You don?t need expensive servos either, all our prototypes were flown with 12mm Savox 255s, all with flush covers but we did use Fu-Fix external bearing kits to reduce side loads on the servo head. Even after all the abuse suffered in the hands of the test pilots they are all still slop free!

    Ballast

Ballast capability in keeping with the latest trend in competition planes, so much more than you expect for this size of plane. It carries 8x 19mm diameter x 35mm brass slugs in the fuse and extra 2 long round brass bars in the wings- A total of just under 900g. We found it just loves weight! It wasn?t long a go that a 3m competition plane carried this much weight but things have moved on!

    Tailplane

Again the aerofoil was specifically designed for the tail plane and this time for maximum control response with minimum deflection. At 10%, the tail plane section is thicker than is the norm but the infinitesimal increase in drag is easily offset by the increased control response for less deflection. The tails are set 0-0 degrees to the wing, it?s clean. To further increase the efficiency, pitch control is accomplished by using an elevator. No wobbly all moving tail and the elevator is driven by either an optional ball raced bell crank from a servo in the fuse, or where ultimate control is required, a servo can be placed in a hatch through the fin to give solid elevator control. This we felt was important to offer as any bell crank mechanism should have access for maintenance as this is a critical moving part and will suffer wear. This made way for offering the option of installing a servo directly in the fin for a really small weight penalty. The tails remain removable for convenient transport or storage.

    Fuselage

The beautifully contoured fuse is strong, light, stiff and slim! Carbon reinforcement gives all important stiffness in the boom. Electronics area is 2.4 GHz friendly with access to the radio and ballast through a conventional slide-on hatch type canopy. The radio tray is laser cut 5 ply birch and 6mm thick adding a great deal of structural strength. The long nose area accentuates the pretty lines but also provides plenty of space to easily balance the model without resorting to shoehorning lead in every nook and cranny! Mini 12mm servos fit in laser cut radio tray with cut outs for batteries and Rx. Snakes are pre fitted in the fuse. Space is tight but everything is carefully worked out to take the ?head scratching? out of installing the radio gear.

    Testing and production

In producing the Schwing we took the unusual decision by testing James?s new model in the public domain and by various independent test pilots including sports and top competition pilots. This can be followed in the RC Groups link below. Of course it?s absolutely pointless unless we acted on their findings and we did, many times! Their remit was to report exactly what they found and no influence was made by Sloperacer. The changes made at this stage significantly improved the final Schwing.
Moreover, the quality of components and installation was checked and tested many times over a prolonged period of development. We fully installed many planes, which included all the prototypes and many pre production and production models.

For a sports plane we wanted the Schwing strong enough for all but the most extreme conditions and we did test prototypes in 65mph+ at 2.9kg but just as important to us was that it needed to be durable. To keep costs within a sports model budget we took a glass lay up and a lot of carbon reinforcement about as far as we could go. This may be a glass ship but its solid and rigid and executed in a way that none of our test pilots thought a full carbon version was necessary. The airframe limits are set very high and only if you want to do serious DS?ing or you want to dive down from 700m+ will you find where these are!
Even full destructive testing was carried out, not intentionally I might add(!) but it gave us valuable information about the weak points in the airframe. Perversely we are rather proud of the latest crash which is after our latest development work. The fuse broke but not where a typical sports model goes. It broke snapping the fuse in the wing saddle area. That?s through the carbon ballast tube too and in the widest part of the fuse and where there is most carbon reinforcement! For this to happen the load carrying incidence pins would need to break through the fuse as well as the top of the joiner hole. The boom, which we have strengthened during development and the canopy, areas where you would expect to break, remained intact. Clearly this type of damage requires a lot more force than you would expect the plane to survive, it had to break somewhere but you would assume it broke at the weakest point. If this is the saddle area then that?s a good result for us! Of course that doesn?t mean you can?t break the typical areas but it needs a better effort than this ?nose in?!

    Sloperacer and James Hammond Team
The Schwing is a plane we are justly proud of, from the excitement of the first design sketches, to virtual Schwing, to prototype, test flying, production and now reports back from happy customers! You can be certain that this plane has been thoroughly developed in every aspect. This has been a team effort but we were all committed in making the Schwing with real high performance at a sports plane price. Importantly, we fly them, build them (and crash them!) and what we wanted and got for the Schwing is everything that we as slope flyers first would want. But don?t take our word for it; ask around because someone will be having a ball with one at a slope near you.

    sneak preview Schwing E

Sneak preview of the Schwing Electric which is just about ready to start CNC milling on the moulds and plugs. The wings are very strong mainly due to it?s massive spar caps. This will be a fully interchangeable E fuse but has enough space for up to 2x3s with a power range from 500w to 2kw+. Expected ready date will be in a few months time, after CNY.

Thanks for bringing em in guys !

Was checking mine out in preparation for the build. ....quality is several notches above a certain chinese manufacturer, If JH can maintain such QC and pricing, I'll be first in line for their bigger 2.5m and 3m versions !!!

you are right tony, was pleasantly surprised too. finishing, layup, fit is great. no excess epoxy mess in fuselage, fuse/wing seam nicely done, carbon sock wing spar, lots of carbon in the fuse. weight matches for both left n right. James H. learned alot from his previous designs and did the improvements. Hope they can keep the quality and QC up in future.
