    Life Hacks (RC)

I always read about life hacks online, youtube and on Facebook. Thought that I should start a thread on life hacks specifically life hacks (RC) and share some petty ideas on this hobby that may make it more fun and interesting yet save some time (probably money too) and have more fun during our time building and flying.

For those who are not sure what life hacking means, see below

Of course my ideas alone are limited. Guys out there may also share and contribute their own unique ideas and experience too if they got any, no matter how small, for hobbyist just like us.

Hope you find some of the tips covered helpful.

Heat Shrink. If you happen to be soldering a connector and got left with only a size that just doesn’t fit, use a small nose plier to ‘stretch’ the shrink a little. You will be surprised it can still balloon up to fit in as a glove. Just apply heat over it and it will shrink as usual. Do not use brute force and overstretch as of course, it will naturally tear.

Other applications of heat shrink. Heat shrink can help us to also join servo extension connectors, served as coloured markers for our TX knobs too, as shown.

During soldering one can solder better with a cloth peg or binder clip. Make sure you are prepared to use it solely for soldering as sometimes the heat may melt your clothes peg too. Wooden or metal clothes peg works better.

You can also use retired damaged RX rod tube tip from your buggy to recycle as your own customized TX knobs.

It is wise to tape over your servo with masking tape before you glue it over the plane surface with epoxy. It will be easier for removal in future should one would need to replace a damaged servo.

Ever have trouble looking for long ruler or measuring tape? Just simply keep a couple of the paper rulers from Ikea and you will find them very helpful to measure your screws, CG, control rods, etc. You can put them below a glass tabletop (if you have one) and refer to it for measurement help in a jiffy.

If you ever have purchased a fax machine, printer, or TV you will normally find the foam pieces that come with it. With a small modification you can turn it into a plane/glider stand and it can help to keep the plane clean at the field while you check the control surface at ease.

Aircon contractors may often discard excess aircon duct insulators. You can grab them and use them as propeller covers.

If you have any retired 4s lipo battery used for bench testing, you can bring them to the field to power your charger and charge your lipo. A little soldering on the red and black cables on your charger you are good to go. Helps to maximize your flying time with an ‘extra’ lipo being charged straight at the field. During charging, you can fly other planes, spend some time enjoying other people’s models or just chitchat while waiting. Remember, a bigger Mah lipo will means you can charge more lipos!

You can always find a cooling fan in an unwanted desktop PC. Hook it up with a 3s or 4s lipo you can bring it to the field to cool yourself down or simply, cool down your plane’s motor so you can quickly take off again. Just be careful of the moving blades!

Having problem looking for the end of the tape end to peel? You can tape the end to a paper clip, bread tag or the waxy end of a peeled sticker paper as a marker.

If your TX does not come with the built-in TX stand you can always use a phone holder, an empty cassette case, ipad holder etc to stand in as a quick fix. In that way you can free your hand from tilting your TX!

Covering film iron. When you have worn out the useful life of the covering cloth of the iron, look around for an unwanted sock and it will work just as good. A female sock will generally have a better fit size.
