Post Images

This thread is to give users a more complete information about posting images on this forum.

1. Sources of Image. The source of image can be from your PC or an external server (you need to know the URL of the image). If the source is from your local PC, the image will be uploaded and stored in the forum?s server, but if the image is from an external source, you can decide to store the image in the forum?s server (i.e. upload it to the forum?s server) or leave it at the external source (in this case, the image will only be physically downloaded to a user?s PC directly when the user browse a post with that image), i.e. the forum?s server will not have a copy of the image file.

2. There are few ways which you can place an image in a post:

2.1 Use HTML Codes.
This is when you are using external image and you want the image to remain in the external source (i.e. you do not want to upload the image to the forum server).

Example html codes:

Note that you can use the "width" and "height" attributes to control the size of your image.

2.2 Use BB Tag.
This is when you are using external image and you want the image to remain in the external source (i.e. you do not want to upload the image to the forum server).

Example BB tags:

[RESIZE=600][/RESIZE]

Note that first example will place the image in full size, and second example will place image with a max width of 600, i.e. the image will be resized so that its width is 600 if it is original width is larger than 600. We strongly suggest that you should use the second example and limit the image width to 800.

2.3 Use Post Editor's "Insert Image" Button

This is by clicking the "Inert Image" button at the top section of the Post Editor. Please make sure you cursor is at the location where you want the image to be placed within the post before you click the ?Insert Image? button.

Once you click the button, a small Insert Image window will appear. There are two tabs near the top of the window; "From Computer" and "From URL". Click "From Computer" if the source image is in your PC, click ?From URL? if the source image is from an external server.

If "From Computer" is clicked:
- Click the "Select Files" button at the bottom of the window.
- Select the image file from your PC.
- Click the "Upload" button.
- A tag line will be inserted in the post. (e.g. ).
- The image you selected will be downloaded and stored in the forum server and you are done.
- You can select more than one images.

If "From URL" is clicked:
- Enter the image's link (i.e. URL) in the box below the word "URL". Make sure you enter the full URL including "http://".
- If you want the image to be downloaded to the forum server, tick the small box next to ?Retrieve remote file and reference locally?, otherwise just leave it blank.
- Click the OK button ad you are done.
- A tag line will be inserted in the post.
example 1.
example 2.

Example 1 is the image remain in the external server, and example 2 is the image being downloaded to the forum server.

2.4 Use Attachment Manager

There are two ways to enter Attachment Manager:
- Click the "Attachments" buttonat the top section of the Post Editor.
- Find the "Additional Options" window, and click the ?Manage Attachments? button.

Once you are in Attachment Manager:
- Click "Add Files" button at top right corner and a small window will appear.
- There are two tabs at the top of the window; "Upload Files from your Computer" and "Website". Click "Upload Files from your Computer" if the source image is in your PC, click "Website" if the source image is from an external server.

If "Upload Files from your Computer" is clicked:
- Click the "Select Files" button at the bottom of the window.
- Select the image file from your PC.
- Click the "Upload Files" button.
- Click the "Insert Inline" button (at bottom right corner of the Attachment Manager window)
- Click the "Done" button (at bottom right corner of the Attachment Manager window)
- A tag line will be inserted in the post. (e.g. ).
- The image you selected will be downloaded and stored in the forum server and you are done.

If "Website" is clicked:
- Enter the image's link (i.e. URL) in the box below the word ?Enter URL of the file?. Make sure you enter the full URL including "http://".
- Click the "Upload" button.
- Click the "Insert Inline" button (at bottom right corner of the Attachment Manager window)
- Click the "Done" button (at bottom right corner of the Attachment Manager window)
- A tag line will be inserted in the post. (e.g. ).

In the above, the "Insert Line" button is to insert the image at the post location where the editor cursor is before you enter the Attachment Manager. If the image is from an external server, the image will be downloaded to the forum server.

If you do not click the "Insert Line" button, the image will be placed in the attachment bucket. All the files (images or otherwise) in the attachment bucket, will be displayed/placed in a separate attachment window below the post.

Please note that the display of items in the attachment window is controlled by the individual browser. Different browser may handle oversize images differently.

We suggest that click the ?Insert Line? button for all images so that you and the forum software have better control over the images.

3. Display/Control of Images

3.1 The forum expects users to use reasonable judgment in deciding the width of images. As a general guide, images should have a width not more than 800 pixel. For most purposes, a width of 400 to 600 should be good enough. In any case, the forum software will clip the display of image to limit the width to 1000 pixels (as of now) without physically clipping the actual uploaded image dimension, i.e. if you right click an image (in your browser) and use the "Save picture as" option to download image to your PC, the original dimension of the image will remain even it is displayed as 1000 pixels wide on the forum.

3.2 The display of images placed in the "attachments" is mainly controlled by the browser which users use when they browse the forum. Please note that the forum software does not control these images in attachments, i.e. it does not limit the size of the image. Most browsers will resize an over-sized image ad fit it into the available display area.

3.3 If you have an image which you want to control its display size without you going through the trouble to resize it before uploading to the forum, you can use the RESIZE BB tag. See examples below:

Example 1:
[RESIZE=400] [/RESIZE]
This will limit the image width to 400 pixels.

Example 2:
[RESIZE=600] [/RESIZE]
This will limit the image width to 600 pixels.

The RESIZE tag work with external linked images.

3.4 Please note that Unregistered and Not Logged In users will only be viewing thumbnails of images.
