Question on submarine ballast need help

    Hi,

I am planning to make a submarine, diameter about 16 cm and about 30cm in diameter. (2 Lock n Lock tupperware containers). Would like to ask if a 140 cc (5oz) syringe filled with water act as a good ballast for bringing it down? Thanks for your help!

cannot throw in some fishing weights ? sure sink

Never built a Sub b4. Not sure can float, but sure can sink to the bottom. Better do proper calculations.

I do have two RTR toy Subs thou.

Heys do you know anywhere in Singapore (not Ebay) which sells those bilge pumps? Need something around $20 or less and needs to be reliable. Fish tanks one can or not? Need to be able to sustain a vacuum when pumping out water.

              Thanks for your link though

Sorry, I have no idea of any r/c bilge pump.

But I do know where to get real ship's bilge pump. Either powered by D.C, A.C or Air. These would be too big for any r/c purpose.

Regarding your question about using a ballast tank based on syringes- Yes, it can make your sub sink. Take a look at this site.

It shows you the different kinds of ballast tanks and how to build a RC model submarine.
make it simple, make it strong, make it work!

Thanks, managed to get a 6V-powered pump at pet safari today, hopefully it works fine

Have another question - I am currently using a prop shaft stylized in the method used for boats, ie outer shaft inner shaft grease. Does not seem to work for subs at a greater depth. Would O rings solve the problem? How should I place the O rings? Thanks!

Don't think fish pumps can work... least those small sizes ones.. because the moment I put my fingers over the expel-side of the pump the pressure was actually quite low.. i doubt the the pump could ever push the water out and leave a vacuum in the hull.

connect syringe to a high torque servo and squeeze water in and out of the syringe could be a better choice..
