    Buggy Mod & $ Saving Ideas (1:16)

    Hi all,

Since I have a buggy, I have been browsing the web searching for ideas to modify and improve on my little Acme NB 16.

This thread is started to encourage experienced buggy owners to share their ideas on some improvement tips; modifications ideas and hopefully some money saving tips which will be helpful to Buggy Newbies like me.

For ease of reading, it will be good to include a 'title' for your post to indicate the subject for disucssion/sharing.

All ideas, contribution and comments are most welcomed.

    Many Thanks

Pull to Shaft Starter Modification @ $20/-

To start the ball rolling, I would like to share my recent experience to convert the pull starter of my NB16 to a shaft starter (electric).

One of the common problem with pull starter is that the coil spring snaps very easily, especially during initial tuning setup and also being not familar with the pull start engine.

Special thanks to skyblueblue for your advise, I managed to find a suitable 'off-market' shaft starter conversion kit from Taising.

Below are some photos for sharing:

This is the conversion kit I bought from Taising @ $20/-.
The kit is from Ho Bao Racing Art (Q2625).
They do have several different sizes to fit different engine type.

Photo of the different parts in the kit.
There is also a small spring and orange parts (see above photo) which I think
will not be needed for the N16 engine conversion.

One concern is that the stock nut size of the NB16 is smaller than the nut size hole in the kit.
At first I was thinking of fabricating a metal spacer part to fill the gap.
After some consideration, I think it will still work well despite the excessive clearance.

Added some grease to moving parts and finished the conversion in minutes

I have to place the starter shaft on the right side of the buggy as the original side is obstructed by the receiver housing.

Final step is to drill and rim another hole on the chasis facilitate the starter shaft assembly

The Finished conversion. Still need to get the electric starter and it is also available at Taising.

All comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

              DIY- Pull Starter Repair

How to repair Pull Starter when the coil snapped

For the benefit of those who are keen to repair their pull starter, I have decided to post this simple step by step DIY repair and hope that someone will benefit from this post.

Based on my limited experience with the NB16, when the starter cord refused to retract, it is most likely that the starter coil spring has snapped. For the NB16, I noticed that the material of the coil spring was of inferior quality and breaks very easily.

At both ends of the coil spring, the material seems to be more flexible and can be bended and lock onto the Starter housing. When the coil spring snap, you might be able to bend the spring and reinsert it into the housing slot.

However, the coil spring may be very brittle and breaks easily. If you are unable to form the bend on the spring, then you might need to solder a short copper wire and use it to lock the spring into the slot through a hole on the housing. Please refer to the steps below:

              Steps by Step:
After removing the pull starter from the engine block, dismantle the assembly by first removing the plastic bracket form its catch.

These are the parts in the pull starter.
(Pull handle and one-way bearing assy not shown on photo)

Usually, the coil spring breaks near the bended part which locks the coil spring to the housing.
As the spring is brittle, I solder a short copper wire and use it to secure the spring to the housing through a drilled hole.

Coil the cord onto the spring casing first (not shown on photo).
Then slot one end of the coil into the spring casing and slowly wind the coil spring into the casing with your fingers.

Carefully place the spring casing into the starter housing and align the wired along the groove and into the small hole through the back of the housing.

Pull to secure the copper wire so that the spring will lock onto the centre of the housing via the centre slot. Bend the copper wire to prevent slippage.

Next tension the coil spring by about one round with the pull cord’s loose end brought close to the housing cord hole. Use a twister to pinch out the cord (which is under tension) and thread it through the housing hole.

Fit the plastic bracket back to the housing while holding the spring casing.

Slot the rubber sleeve and the starter handle into the cord and secure with two knots

Make sure that the one-way bearing is fitted in the correct orientation – (turns the engine clockwise when view from the rear)

Align the pull starter with the ‘hex on-way’ bearing and assemble the pull starter back to the rear engine block. Seal with silicon (red) if necessary

              That's all Folks!

Do let me know if this has helped you. All comments and advise are most welcomed.

HoPe this post will be useful to some

Hi skyblueblue, thanks for your reponse and proposal

I have dismantled the engine and taken most of the pictures. However, I am not sure if Swan carries engine spare parts for rebuild. I only know they sells the whole engine.

This is a very informative website which helps me when I strip the Acme engine apart for inspection and servicing:

Protect Electronics Components @ 5cents solution

Protect all Electronics Components with ordinary balloons (5 cents solution)

Read from several post that Buggy Driver used to protect their electronic components against excessive oil, sand, mud and water from sipping into the components and damaging the electronics.

Got a hint from nixaad today, and started to use balloons to protect the servos and receivers. Please refer to the photos.

Simple balloon cut into 2 pieces

                      Smaller piece for servo

                      Bigger piece for receiver

think for the servo, can just leave it as it is..
just remember to clean it thruly after each bashing by using Paint brush and Serpent-Gum. Servo are quite water-resistant and dust-resistant but not water-proof lah...
